Pixels Past supplies AtariAge with a wide assortment of supplies that allow us to create new homebrew games for the Atari 2600, 5200, Atari 8-bit computers, and ColecoVision systems. AtariAge and Pixels Past also work closely together to develop new products for classic consoles, such as the Redemption 5200 Controller Adapters. Joe Grand of Pixels Past also created the popular and fast-paced Atari 2600 homebrew game SCSIcide.
Pixels Past will be alongside AtariAge at PhillyClassic 5, with the brand new Stelladaptor 2600 to USB Interface, the Redemption 5200 Controller Adapters, and a selection of their homebrew products. Additionally, Joe Grand of Pixels Past will be onhand to autograph copies of Hardware Hacking: Have Fun While Voiding Your Warranty, a new book about hacking a wide variety of electronics, including classic gaming systems.
The Stelladaptor 2600 Controller to USB Interface allows the use of standard Atari 2600-compatible controllers, including joysticks, paddles, and driving controllers, with modern computers running Windows, Macintosh, or Linux operating systems. Any Atari 2600-compatible joystick, when plugged into your computer through the Stelladaptor, will behave as a normal joystick. This allows the use of classic Atari controllers with any software that will work with an 8-direction digital joystick controller (left, right, up, down, and diagonals).
In addition to joystick controllers, the Stelladaptor also automatically recognizes the Atari 2600 paddle and driving controllers. To take advantage of these controllers, software running on the host computer (such as emulators or games) must be updated to accurately handle the data being sent by the Stelladaptor. We have worked closely with the authors of the excellent z26 Atari 2600 emulator for Windows and an updated version of z26 will be released that automatically recognizes when the Stelladaptor is plugged in and allows you to play joystick, paddle, and driving controller games without any additional configuration. You can also use your Atari 2600 joystick and paddle controllers in the popular MAME arcade emulator.
We'll have Windows and Macintosh computers setup at the Pixels Past booth demonstrating the new Stelladaptor 2600 to USB Interface, and a special price if you purchase one at the show!
As fans of the Atari 5200 are acutely aware, the standard controllers Atari shipped with the 5200 are lacking in several areas. The largest problem is that they are prone to failure, and it's difficult to find 5200 controllers that are 100% functioning. The second problem is that even when you find yourself in the company of working 5200 controllers they are not the greatest controllers to actually use when you want to enjoy games. The analog joystick is non-centering, making it difficult to maintain accurate control in many games, and the fire buttons are uncomfortable and awkward to use.
To help remedy these problems, AtariAge and Pixels Past have created a three new Redemption 5200 controller adapters that will allow you to use 2600, 7800, Sega SMS/Genesis, and PC controllers on the Atari 5200. Stop by the Pixels Past booth to demo a Redemption 5200 adapter and purchase one at the show!
