2600 music - rockin' the Casbah

(I went back in and edited this blog entry, since I found that the information I was asking for in the first place, was right in front of me the whole time. Serves me right for not doing a little more research before posting this blog entry. )

One of my still-unfinished projects is to create a set of 2600 sound samples for use with Apple's GarageBand.

Thanks to this handy web page, I now know how to do just that.

The trick is, having the 2600 spit out as the correct* notes, so I can assign them to the right keys.

Tommy's java app gives a list of 2600 sounds and corresponding notes. You can also tell it to restrict the list to notes that are only a given amount out of tune. Very handy. That, coupled with SoundX, should let me record a select range of notes needed for the samples.

In the end, I'm hoping to end up with a GarageBand version of Tommy's 2600 Music Utility. The only downside, is that GarageBand won't actually spit out any data useful for programming the 2600 (unless there's a way to convert the project files). But it would still be fun to play with. :)

We'll see how all this works very shortly. I'll be using a modded 2600 to record the sounds - not an emulator. It's a little more work to set up, but it will be more accurate.

* "correct" being a relative term when applied to the 2600's ability to generate anything resembling a note ;)

binary that will play the correct* notes, and display them on screen, so I can record them.

Shouldn't be hard to do in bBasic. Nathan's first programming project?

Nevermind. I'm a complete idiot.

The java app displays all the info I need - it's just that the columns are crunched together in Safari, and I couldn't tell what was what.

Also, the music utility gives the info I need as well, when I click on a key. Don't know how I missed that before. Guess I assumed the numbers were some convoluted music notation beyond my understanding.

Ah... somedays it's good to get to be a stupid newbie, all over again. :lolblue:

I'm a little confused as to what you hope the end result to be. Are you hoping to create something like a MIDI voice that spits out 2600 quality sounds programmable from GarageBand? Originally when you described it I thought you were just going to compile a bunch of sound effects from games that could be included as Apple Loops in GarageBand.

Yes, but it will be samples from the 2600. Not MIDI.

Not specific sound effects, but the base sounds that comprise the effects (and music) of the 2600. Not everything though, just ones that are "mostly" in tune.

It wouldn't be a big deal to add specific sound effects though, and make an instrument out of that. Any suggestions?

I dunno from a programming/Atari perspective but as a casual GarageBand user it'd be cool to have a library of videogame samples to choose from for the purpose of adding a little creative texture to recordings. The popular stuff. Donkey Kong jump, Pac, Ms Pac, Asteroids thump, etc.

Both would be cool but you can only do what you can do. BTW, I have nothing planned for 'em, but I do routinely collect GarageBand samples and such for use on future projects. You know...future projects. Those things you have every intention of doing if real life would just let up for a moment or two and let you catch up to fun stuff. And when you do get a moment you just spend it on TV so then you realize you need a moment or three? :lolblue:

I gotta admit I'm sorta impressed with your to-do lists though. The simple act of writing it down helps you prioritize and remember things. I should try that.

Thanks, although you should know that the to-do lists don't actually ensure I'll get anything done. :lolblue:
