Thought I needed a new tuner

This past week I noticed an issue where a few recordings were cropped:

I didn't think much about it at first as the episodes I noticed it on had been recorded multiple times, so I just watched another recording.

I then ran into it when watching live TV. I did some experiments and realized it was always occurring on the 3rd tuner1, #2/0 (the tuners are identified in each window's titlebar text):

This explained why I didn't see it that often - it would only happen when 3 or 4 tuners were in use at the same time (there were 2 shows being recorded when I ran into it while watching live TV).

I power cycled the tuners, didn't help. I wondered if perhaps the firmware update I did a couple weeks back had a hiccup, so I went to download the firmware update tool again and noticed they had posted another update on June 4th. Applied the new update - didn't help.

At this point I figured something had just gone wrong with the tuner, so was about to order that new model with the built in H.264 converter when I remembered the ability of the firmware update tool to use VLC to watch live TV. So I tried it and tuner 2/0 worked just fine, no cropping; therefore, the problem had to be something with EyeTV.

Did some research online but couldn't find anything to help, so I started going through the menu options and noticed that the Aspect Ratio was set to Wide:

I switched it to Automatic and voila, the picture was correct. I played back one of the cropped recordings and saw that it was also set to Wide. Switched it back to Automatic and was rewarded with the full picture.

Looked back through the recordings, I realized that the first one with the wrong aspect ratio was recorded on June 2nd - the day I'd posted the screenshot about the new channel BUZZR. To capture a screengrab of a window on the Mac you use COMMAND-SHIFT-4. The shortcut key for the Wide aspect ratio is COMMAND-OPTION-4, so I most likely accidentally changed the setting while taking a screenshot, though I have no idea why I wouldn't have notice it then.

I would have expected the Aspect Ratio setting to be tied to a specific channel, not a specific tuner. The reason I would expect this sometimes the broadcasters configure their channels incorrectly, note the oval wheel on the white car on Rev'n, so being able to override a specific channel's aspect ratio setting can be very handy:

Overriding it for a specific tuner doesn't make much sense. Anyway, I'm posting this in case anybody else runs into the problem of cropped recordings in EyeTV - hopefully their internet search will be more fruitful than mine was :)

1 the tuners on my Mac mini are numbered as 1/0, 1/1, 2/0 and 2/1
