NES Dogbone controllers!
So I went to the video game store today. I didn't see anything I was interested in. I looked at the controllers. I saw an NES dogbone controller. I already had one, except mine had a little scrape on it. When I went to buy it, the guy told me he had some brand new ones, but they didn't have the Nintendo logo on it. But I told him I wanted the one I had picked out that did. And here's the best part. The price was only $7.99. For a dog bone controller. And the late NES top loader that went with it they had was >$100. How weird is this pricing scheme? Well, I already spent five million dollars on a top loading NES, so I didn't need it. So I got home, got the NES out, connected it. The only games within reach without digging for is my Tengen collection. So I put Tetris in. And I got >500 lines before for some reason, the game didn't respond to my controller for a few blocks and it screwed me up and I died at 530 lines or so. The funny thing is the shape counter was all maxed out. I think the trouble with this Tetris is that the top speed of the falling blocks is still at a managable, controllable speed. So I was able to maneuver the blocks well into the 400 line range. If you want an impossible speed at 200, the licensed Nintendo version is for you. With the Tengen version, it's more of an endurance test than anything. So now I have two NES dogbone controllers. I had been looking for one without a scrape for some time. And I finally found one. And it works well for the most part. I like these controllers. It makes me wonder why they put the square ones out. Man, those corners hurt! Especially when you're playing some square small system like a DS.
