Ultima - Exodus, Being Ignored

Once again I am trying to Play Ultima - Exodus (NES), it's just so unclear on where to go or what to do. I wanted to try to play through it without a walkthrough or help. On top of that when I was forming my party I didn't get the characters I thought I was getting. I wound up with a thief, a cleric, a wizard, and a guy that looks liked a sheperd (no fighter!). The cleric and the "sheperd" are great if you encounter undead enemies, one spell from them and you can wipe out an entire party of skeletons, etc. Right now I am just hanging around the castle and primary town and "level gridning". I fear my party may not be strong enough to make it very far in the game. One aspect of Ultima - Exodus is the way you acquire gold, you have to decide who gets it and you can't share it (at least I don't know how). But I will carry on and see just how far I can make it.

Am I on everyone's ignore list? I think I only contribute when I have something thoughtful to say (I don't troll or spam) but people seldom respond to anything I say. Whatever...

I'm curious to know how far you make it in this game, and what tips you might have in doing so if (or when) you get there. I always got destroyed in this game and never could make it very far. :(

I will let you know how I fare Austin. If I pick up on anything that could be a tip or helpful I will certainly let you know. It's not the world's easiest RPG.

Well, one bit of starter advice is that you always have to talk to Lord British whenever someone hits an EXP multiple of 100 to level up. This has pros and cons. You can attain increased health, but once someone is at Level 05, far more powerful monsters appear in the overworld. Another thing to keep in mind is that some classes are useful, and some you should stay away from. Race also plays a major part. Here's my breakdown of the races:

Human: All around good, stats cap out at 75, great for any class, but preferably rangers

Dwarf: Excellent strength (max 99), very good wisdom (max 75). Good dexterity (max 75) and decent intellect (max 50). Preferred classes: fighter, barbarian, cleric.paladin

Elf: Very good strength (max 75), fantastic dexterity (max 99), very good intellect (max 75), ok wisdom (max 50). Preferred classes: thief, barbarian, lark

Fuzzy: Horrible strength (max 25), fantastic dexterity (max 99), equally-fantastic intellect (max 99), very good wisdom (max 75). Preferred classes: wizard, alchemist.

Bobbit: Very good strength (max 75), ok dexterity (max 50, very good intellect (max 75), fantastic wisdom (max 99). Preferred classes: cleric, illusionist, paladin

Now, with that in mind, only wizards and clerics have MP based on the full amount of their primary stat (INT/WIS, respectively). Some may have MP based off half of one or the other (Rangers go off the lowest of both, druids get faster MP recovery but is based off the higher of the two). So try to factor this in for the party you want.

Tedious as it might be, you might want to create throwaway characters just to pool their money into your party leader to try and purchase the best standard weapons/armor from the start and delete the throwaways.

I have a copy of the game myself, so if you need further help, let me know and during my off time from work I'll throw it in and try to help you further.

Thanks NIghtSprinter, you are a wealth of Ultima information. I may need to start over and make sure my party is exactly what I want or, like you said, create a few throw away characters. I appreciate your offer but I would never expect you to play Ultima just for my benefit.
