What is TATE?

Austin

In my video below, I explain TATE and the various ways it can be achieved outside of the arcade and in the home. I also briefly cover a few other platforms that manage a TATE effect as well:

If you happen to sit through it (it's about five minutes long), I would love your feedback on it.. It's short and sweet, but it took quite a long time to get it together from start to finish (granted, I had little to no plan when I went into it). :)

TATE? Oh, I get it. It's a game played on a screen oriented like a portrait rather than a landscape.

Good timing. I finally tried rotating the TV to try Merlin's Walls the other day. The colors were messed up, but there doesn't seem to be permanent damage.

Made me wonder what VCS games could be rotated 90 degrees and still be playable. So far I've come up with Othello and Combat.

A TATE Pac-Man would make an awesome homebrew.

From what I have been told, after you flip it, you need to wait for the TV to degauss before turning it back on (ten minutes is a good number, I hear). The discoloration is a possible side-effect of turning it on too soon, although admittedly I don't have that problem with my TV (It is newer, though.. well, much newer than the Commodore monitor I tried flipping in the '90s that DID have serious color issues after).

I also agree that a TATE Pac-Man homebrew would be awesome. I'm curious if the 7800 would be able to do it along with a standard horizontal-friendly version in the same cart?

Well, greasy nerd nuggets in nipple sauce! I thought it was as unfunny as the rest of the crap I post. Let me try again.

TATE in One Easy Step:

Play while lying on your side.

Done.

I needed to record some SNES gameplay footage last week, however, I had my TV tilted vertically for my shmups. I didn't feel like flipping it back, so I recorded my footage with my head tilted to the side. It was pretty difficult and I do not recommend anyone else trying it for extended periods of time.

Yep, not a good idea. Your head could stick that way and you'd look like an upside-down L.

Hmmm, I actually have a spare Neoflex at work. Someone wanted it, used it and gave it back after two weeks (said it was "too tall"). I might have to test it out with some emus.
