Sega Dreamcast and the hell of 9/9/99

So, I was at EB Games a mere month and I had my first system release...the mighty and lovable Sega Dreamcast! Just before the debut, I had my first EB Managers meeting in Orlando, FL at the Disney Swan hotel. Alcohol and free swag! Yes, various video game companies, shower me with gifts and t-shirts!!! Anyways, the first day went relatively easy except for that pesky Midway games problems that none of them would work in the system and later released with "HOT! NEW!" stickers. I had 100 Dreamcasts in stock with about 20 pre-orders since the previous managerial staff were fools and took no pre-orders. I happened to sell though them all since on new systems days, managers work "iron man" shifts (opening to closing for you non retail cats) and got the call from my DM at 6pm to his incredulousness and asked how I did it. "Ummm...the staff and I just told people Dreamcast was awesome". What a lovely day. None of the problems that would plague me for PS2 ($1000 bundles, jackhole customers, people telling me their child was in the hospital in a coma and wouldn't come out of it unless they got a PS2) or Xbox/Gamecube weekend (Lord, the worst weekend ever...4 straight iron man shifts). Only system I wish would have sold better was Neo Geo Pocket. Dammit, if it only had a backlight because the third party mag/light combo was heavier than the damn NGP...

Oh sorry, you want a retail hell story, no? Lemme think....

Someone brings back a PS2 and asks for the money back. The box looks a little suspect...the woman asks me why...well, PS2 boxes don't come shrinkwrapped. So I proceed to rip the shrinkwrap and she screams "WHAT ARE YOU DOING???". I said "Obviously, I must verify the item". "The serial number is visible!", she says...and it was...but something was still fishy so I keep opening. She then threatens me with a lawsuit because I have "impugned her character". I am not deterred!!! Inside.........a shiny new.......rock. WELL! She's all distraught and I calmly ask "Was this purchased at our Bedrock store?" which causes my assistant to go into convulsions of laughter and rolling on the floor. The woman runs out thinking I'd call the cops. Just another day at EB Games!

Hahaha, that part about the PS2 is AWESOME. I've done my time with EB, but have never witnessed anything like that first-hand..

The only "launch days" I worked were for games. I was there for the Nintendo DS and PSP launches, but they weren't anything to shout home about.. Busy, yes, but nothing too crazy. XBOX 360 launch, I fortunately had off, but I hear that wasn't anything to write home about either.

Halo 2 launch was crazy though, as was GTA: Vice City.. Oh, and we could always look forward to a new Madden game coming out, ugh.. Those are some of the worst customers, the Madden fanboys.. "Eh, yo, u got mah madden jonx??" "Um, possibly. It depends on if you speak English or not."
