Atari Flashback Portable - My thoughts so far...

So some things I've learned since yesterday as I've been testing roms on the Portable with guys on Atariage.com

1) The unit I got was a early unit. I had a new version of Space Invaders and Jungle Hunt (both Taito titles) which will not be on the later models. SCORE!!
2) Everyone is sold out of these (even the producing company) for a few more weeks. Glad I jumped on this.
3) A great little system. Most of the roms tried so far have worked. The ones not working are the fan projects that use hardware tricks and that generally breaks emulators.

Here is where I talk about and show some pictures on Facebook:
My Toys R Us story.

Where to get one?
Atgames website is where I ordered mine. Currently sold out as I write this.
Ebay has some with free shipping for under $50 (as I write this).

Basic release news comes down to this:

Atgames sold off their existing stock of early production models. Most that ordered them from their website got those models, and those had the new version of Space Invaders and Jungle Hunt, which are both Taito titles. Looking at the box art on the ebay ones more than likely those are the same early production batch.

After November 30th/mid December (heard two dates) the next batch of Portables will be basically the same as the early production but with no Space Invaders and Jungle Hunt. Naturally the Jungle Hunt rom works fine in the SD slot (tested that myself). But no new Space Invaders. As you can see in my video while the game is spot on in look and sound the action could have used some polish as you can see in my humorous video in the links above with the last .. slow... invader.

Frogger on the other hand is amazing. No music for reasons however the look and sounds are spot on!

So the Atari Flashback Portable is highly suggested. Just so well done. Thank you Atgames!

Just an amazing little unit

A bit thicker and longer than your standard cell phone this is the portable Atari 2600 that I was waiting for. The screen is nice. The D pad is a good though a tad touchy. You quickly get used to the D-Pad as you try out all the built in games. And when you have had fun with that, you can load other games (rom images) that you have on the SD card.

As a retro-nut I have all the original Atari systems. And when something retro comes out I think it is cool but I may or may not get it. But a Atari 2600 that fits easily in your pocket? I ordered this as quick as I could. :D

Now if Atgames could only use the same mold, same screen, SD card support, and make an Atari LYNX Flashback. Now THAT would make many more Atari fans very happy. Especially if it had TV out support.

In the meantime, thanks Atgames for this amazing product. :D
