In 1972 there was only one system: Odyssey by Magnavox

There were a total of 23 games released for that system during 1972 as far as I can tell. They were released in three groups:

12 with the Main Console plus 1 free game by registering your console.

4 with the Shooting Gallery add-on accessory

6 released for individual purchase or as a set of six.

I'm emoticoning these for future reference. The emoticon "system" is different from the Vs. Ultraman "system" and is just shorthand for general feelings my son and I had for each game. Your mileage may vary.

With the main console:

:| Table Tennis

:| Tennis

 Football

:| Hockey

:) Ski

 Submarine

 Cat and Mouse

:D Haunted House

 Analogic

 Roulette

:) States

:) Simon Says

And the "Register your Odyssey and Get a Free Game" game,

:) Percepts

With the Shooting Gallery add-on:

 Prehistoric Safari

 Shootout!

 Dogfight

 Shooting Gallery

And finally, the Six Extra Games from 1972:

:D Fun Zoo

 Baseball

 Invasion

:) Wipeout

:| Volleyball

:| Handball

If these emoticons don't completely jibe with the reviews/critiques/whining I've given, so be it. My opinions about things can change with my mood.

I'll start 1973 games, (all four of them) some time soon.

you're lucky your son is 7, he's old enough to play the games with you but young enough not to think of asking to be paid to play games with you.

:) Actually, I owe him a quarter per game and I have to pay him at the end of every "era". Which means I owe him for the pre-VCS era. (though there were some RCA Studio II games that even I couldn't find it in my heart to force him to play. *shudder*)

He makes me pay in other ways, too, sometimes with junk food. Usually he only asks me to play a game of his choice with him. Often, this means we play Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube and he kicks my ass.

Sometimes, when I've had him play a particularly painful-for-him Odyssey game (he just didn't "get" Analogic and was frustrated to tears.) he just flat out won't want to try another (once bitten, twice shy, I guess.). that's when I have to start offering bonus cash and/or snacks as incentive. He's a pretty smart kid, and knows not to exploit this because he's begun to realize that not everyone on the block has the selection of games (modern and retro) to which he is privy.

I know the blog is only up to 1973 at this point, but in our "lab" we're up to 1977. Thank the gods we can finally play Atari VCS games! He's genuinely enjoying those and has actually requested to play Surround/Chase a few times. We're on a bit of a hiatus now while I try to get the blog up to date, Ebay the stuff from pre-VCS and find the stuff for the coming years. (I think we may have to give the APF MP1000 a miss, unless somone can lend me theirs.) Anyway, thanks for the comment. :)

If/When you get to Sega Genesis you can borrow mine.

..along with my collection of thrilling titles like Clue and X-Mutants! :)

seriously though, the futher up the time line you go, the more and more and more games there are. stopping before playstation might be a good idea, or a great idea.

I absolutely see your point. Someday in the future, I'm sure the shreads of my sanity and/or wallet will stitch themselves together and talk me out of this. Untill then, I'll just be taking it game by game.

Hah, so you payed your kid!? That explains a lot.

I hear you. I've checked that system and man, what a disgrace compared to the other systems available at the time.

Not having read the rest of this series, I wonder how far you did go. I'll just keep going through it. Yeap, chronologically. One obsessed guy following another one. Surely nothing can go wrong.

Anyway, 23 games is quite a big number considering it was the first year of the first console ever created. I expected less games to be available at that time, honestly.

I didn't pay my daughter, but that was because she hadn't been sullied by modern games yet. My son had been playing Playstation games since he was about four and by this time he was a pro. Now I'd had to pry him off of DOTA2 to get him to play... He might actually do it to join me and I honestly don't think he'd require recompense.

and yes 23! that's larger than some libraries that came out years later. (no, I can't think of them, but surely it must be)
