What would you show Doc about 2010?

We all continue to speculate whether we will have hoverboards by 2015, but if you go back to the first movie, Doc Brown was originally planning to go 25 years into the future before the Libyans showed up. He always dreamed of seeing the future looking beyond his years, seeing the progress of mankind.

Of course 1985 + 25 = 2010.

So suppose it were two years ago, and Doc asks you to show him around and explain how things have changed since 1985. What do you tell him? For example:

  • Pretty much everyone has a home computer now, and we don't measure things in kilobytes anymore.
  • In movies, the concept of "special effects" is obsolete. Anything you can imagine can be rendered with photo-realistic computer animation. (I'd ease him in with Titanic and LOTR before showing him Avatar.)
  • Oh, by the way, we're watching these movies from a disc that looks like a CD, but with more than 10 times the capacity. Who needs to "Be Kind. Rewind." ?

What else?

Oh yeah, before showing Titanic to Doc, I'd explain that the footage of the wreck is real. He'd most likely be interested since from his perspective the remains were just found less than 2 months ago on September 1, 1985.

I'd show him my iPhone. Pocket computer, cell phone, video phone, video camera, digital camera, music player, movie player, game machine, etc., all in one.

Then tell him to buy Apple stock when he got back to 1985. Lots of it.

Actual HDTV on a flat panel display.

Heck, the Internet didn't exist outside of DARPA and universities. In '85 it was still BBSs and modems.

The iPhone does cover a bunch of separate devices - cellphones, MP3 players, digital cameras

Flash memory - gigabytes on a postage stamp

Reality TV (just to prove it's not all good)

And although CGI special effects are the norm, there's still some who still prefer practical effects (e.g. Casino Royale).

Yeah, I'm sure Doc would react to smart phones just as his 1955 self did to the camcorder. "This... is truly amazing."

Oh, and Doc, you know that Playboy you packed in your suitcase? You won't be needing it...

There are plenty of advances in astronomy to show him:

  • Photos of Uranus, Neptune, and their moons.
  • The discovery of the Kuiper Belt and the new "dwarf planet" category for Pluto
  • The hundreds of known extrasolar planets.
  • The ALH84001 meteorite, which comes from Mars and is said to contain "strong evidence" of Martian life. The discovery was a big deal in 1996, but the public seems to have forgotten about it.
