Recommend a game worth 7 nights...

Out of respect for the AA Community at large I did not start a thread in Classic Gaming, instead I am asking through my much less intrusive blog.

Starting tonight I am working 7 12 hour nights straight. I was hoping you guys could recommend a game or two to keep me interested for 7 nights.

Obviously I don't have consoles here at work but I do have my laptop set up with several emulators: NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis, 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx, WonderSwan, and Aquarius.

Hoping you guys see this post and can throw some ideas my way.

Do you know you're unlike any other?
You'll always be my thunder

Ultima - Exodus, Being Ignored

Once again I am trying to Play Ultima - Exodus (NES), it's just so unclear on where to go or what to do. I wanted to try to play through it without a walkthrough or help. On top of that when I was forming my party I didn't get the characters I thought I was getting. I wound up with a thief, a cleric, a wizard, and a guy that looks liked a sheperd (no fighter!). The cleric and the "sheperd" are great if you encounter undead enemies, one spell from them and you can wipe out an entire party of skeletons, etc. Right now I am just hanging around the castle and primary town and "level gridning". I fear my party may not be strong enough to make it very far in the game. One aspect of Ultima - Exodus is the way you acquire gold, you have to decide who gets it and you can't share it (at least I don't know how). But I will carry on and see just how far I can make it.

Am I on everyone's ignore list? I think I only contribute when I have something thoughtful to say (I don't troll or spam) but people seldom respond to anything I say. Whatever...

Tax Avoiders (2600) Review

Okay, it's tax season so I pulled this game to play - Tax Avoiders (shouldn't it be Tax Evaders or at least wouldn't that sound cooler?).

Here's the bottom line - this game is not good. In the main screen you are supposed to collect $ while avoiding government red tape (Oh! that's what that red mis-shapen object is!). You can run and jump (not up but forward) and I don't know how this game "decides" what you touch or collide with but most of the $ goes right by you and does not add to your total. There is an elevator that comes at random and can carry you to the other levels where (I guess) you can earn more $. Eventually you will be taken to a second screen where a man could either be an IRS agent, an investment adviser or something else depending on their color, so you should run from or run too them depending on their color. This is also the screen where you are to invest and put your holdings in a briefcase. I have read the HTML manual and it makes sense on paper but this game is a mess. Your goal is to a make a cool million over the course of a year - good luck, I tried.

The graphics are simple, John Q. (you) are nicely detailed. The main screen is very plain and boring, the secondary screen at least has more to do (ladders, platforms, running from or too the little agent). The sound is standard 2600 fare. The controls are fine but figuring out how to climb the ladders in the second screen is a bit difficult.

Because I can't program anything (the most I can do is hack others work) I am never too hard on a game. So it's not the best game in the 2600 library but it has some original ideas I just wish they were better implemented.

Overall 6/10

Santa Claus Saves the Earth (GBA) Review

Let me first say two things: I am only on Area 3 and I have not heard the sound effects or music (baby is sleeping).

Other than that this is a fun platformer and certainly more fun around the holidays. You are Santa and an evil witch, Nimla (who has a serious problem with Christmas and children getting their gifts), has transported you into another dimension to keep you from delivering the childrens presents on time. The Areas are all different, you start off inside a cave, then onto an ice mountain, then some sort of mechanical area with conveyor belts. Your goal is to collect red, green, and blue tokens, and the key to escape as well as "ammo" because if you don't have ammo you swing your sack as a weapon and it makes you very vulnerable. The enemies start with cavemen and go up to gun-slinging baddies (so far, at least).

The graphics are nicely done and Santa "breathes" heavily when standing still, he is also very acrobatic (you'll see if you get a chance to play).

This game is highly recommended for someone looking for a good holiday platformer.

Overall - 8/10

Merry Christmas,

Christmas Games - Elf - The Movie (GBA)

Let's start with some good points: It's in 5 languages! It has 3 mini-games all of which DO NOT have to be unlocked! Snowman Building is like Sokoban, then there's Santa Says... which is a memorization game, and finally there's Cobbler's Workshop in which you match up elves' shoes to drop them in boxes.

If that's not enough excitement for you already then you are in for a platforming treat! Enter Story Mode where you will be treated to still images of the movie and hopping for lollipops and candies while avoiding chasms and polar bears. If you run into a polar bear you are sent back! You just don't take damage you are also punished! And the bears look about as aggressive as the Coca-Cola Polar Bears.

The graphics aren't bad it's the repetitive goals, scenery (don't get me wrong I really like snow scenery and falling snow it is my favorite), and game play that spell doom for Story Mode. On a positive not you can restart where you left off with a password system.

The mini-games are overall more fun than the Story Mode.

Overall Score: 4/10 (Mostly because of the mini-games)
