The Definitive Lynx Cart Variation List

Atari Smeghead

Recommended Posts

Time to add Zaku :) I don't know if anyone has come up with an official name for the type yet, but I'd propose "Curved Lip without Fuji" (the nickname for Atari's three-stripe logo).

I just added Zaku. I decided to simplify things by calling the cart style "new curved."

"Bitchy" needs to be added as well.

:)

I added Bitchy also. It's cool that we now have five different PCB colors (Green, Black, Red, White and Blue) and a new curved style!

... and bootlegs (Cubes, Dynablaster, Rapid Racer, my Raiden, Lynx Diagnostic, Marble Madness, Marlboro Go)

post-1517-1238547426_thumb.jpg

Looks like two different PCBs instead of back/front view?

Nope... That's a back to front view.

Not two different PCBs

I can't match the via-holes.

Good eye ya got there, Roland! Upon closer examination, I did technically make a mistake on that picture. I have several from the Polish eBay guy, and all but one (the EOTB demo) uses identical PCB boards, the one labeled "256kB Atari Lynx Game Cartridge." The EOTB demo uses one labeled "128kB Atari Lynx Game Cartridge." The only difference is the placement of a couple of unused holes/leads. I picked one of the carts at random to give a reverse view, and happened to pick the "wrong one."

You get a point for your obvservation skills. :)

Warbirds ... (has) been published on the black "Long Live the Lynx!" PCB 1 (in addition to post-Atari releases like Fat Bobby, Hyper Drome, etc.). These are likely legitimate.

We just recently saw a Warbirds on the older style Telegames Black PCB 2 as well...

post-1517-125709585679_thumb.jpg

...makes me wonder how many more titles were released on this board.

I just got my copy of Zaku today, and is it me, or is the Fuji faintly on the board still?

Nope, I noticed it too. It makes me think they got one of the original molds but had to fill in the part of the mold for the Fuji since Atari/Infogrames has the trademark on it still. I take it they've given up the trademarks to "Lynx" and the Lynx logo with the two-colored 'X'?

I know Remnant used Green #2 and maybe #1 as well.

If anyone knows for sure or has an extra long Green PCB version of Remnant, please let me know!

I made the changes mentioned thus far. Thanks everyone!

My next step, in the next day or two, is to document all the different versions of green PCBs.

Cheers,

Smeg

That does not sound like a lot of fun.

I just got an extra long Remnant in the mail today!

I'll take a picture later this week to share. :)

So... the Remnant is the same PCB as the Lexis and Ponx long PCBs.

I'm excited to add this one to the collection as it is a bit harder to find these longer boards...

One thing I noticed... and I haven't played the game before, so I am unsure:

The label of my cart is exactly like the one on the Black "Long Live the Lynx" carts.

Notice: in the fine print it states "CGE2K Special Edition"

Now, when I turn on the game, after the Songbird title screen I get a 'CGE2K Special Edition' screen as well.

Does this happen in the Long Live the Lynx editions? Is it the same thing?

I think Carl can answer this one (unless someone out there has a Black cart they can test this evening).

I don't know if there were special Remnant carts made for CGE2K (but I can hope... right? lol)

Editing... because I found this info on the net:

In an unexpected move, Songbird also announced the availability of a "CGE2K

special edition" version of Remnant, the highly-anticipated 3D space combat

game for the Lynx. "This is a game no Lynx fan should be without,"

commented Carl Forhan, owner of Songbird and the developer of Remnant. "It

puts the Lynx into high gear -- from the explosions to the 3D scaling to

the audio, Remnant sets a new standard for 'next generation' Lynx games."

This special edition of Remnant is a complete game, and features more than

a dozen sectors to clear in the Arcade play mode. A future version of

Remnant is anticipated to include a Strategic play mode as well, where the

player must repel enemy squadrons and protect friendly outposts. MSRP for

Remnant is $39.95.

Link to this...

Further on that site:

Looking for some cool space combat action on your Lynx? Try Remnant for the

Lynx, brought to you by Songbird! This awesome 3D game features 20

spectacular waves of alien invaders and meteors for you to eliminate. Only

70 copies of this special CGE2K edition were made, and no more will be

produced, so get yours while they last!

Now I guess the question is... is there a difference of this version and the ones in the black carts?

Here's another link to that info (right on Carl's site)

There is just ONE version of Remnant out there, no matter the size of the cart. They are all the same AFAIK.

The planned future verion of Remnant that was "anticipated to include a Strategic play mode as well" never saw the light of the day.

Quote from the seller in an email to me:

"As far as I remember, I

bought the cart at CGE2K which I attended. I remember talking to

the Songbird guy there. "

SwedenLynxer...did you verify Remnant black carts to make sure it still had the "cge2k special edition" flash screen upon start-up?

I would assume Carl would have removed that as he said only 70 carts would be made for CGE and no more than that. If released in a different cart style... Without editing the flash screen out... That would take a bit of glamor out of this cart. But still... This is officially a cge2k release... Is is still a special edition with a limited number of carts produced. I think that adds a bit more value to it. I don't care about value as it won't matter anymore being that this cart is locked within my collection vault now! Lol.

I'm anxious to hear from Carl on this.

Eric,

My black "Long Live the Lynx!" Remnant does indeed have "CGE2K Special Edition" on the cart and has a CGE2K screen as the third title screen. Printed (or perhaps embossed is the correct term) on the back on the cart itself is "LC3 REV A - ©SEMAG 2000" so I'm assuming my cart is actually from 2000. I don't recall where I got it from... certainly not CGE since I've only been to the 2003 show.

Hope that helps,

Smeg

So the long boards (like ponx) were CGE2K exclusives. It is unfortunate the CGE special edition wasn't removed fromt the later carts... But either way from what I understand it is still a limited edition CGE exclusive which is nice to have. I still got to get the black carts though...like the one you posted smeg

I know bumping old threads "isn't cool" but this one should be, if only for the releases of Lynx Poker, Hotdog, Relief Pitcher, and the copies of Solitaire that have already made it onto eBay. :)

Hi John,

Nope, bumping this thread is very cool indeed! :)

I just added the four you mentioned, plus I put Eric's EotB "Beta pre-release" for lack of a better moniker.

I've been out of the Lynx loop for a while (due to a lack of funds and an overall busy-ness in my schooling and my writing career) so if I've missed anything else, please let me know.

I did notice I missed a huge eBay auction of some different-looking cart styles (Eric's thread) so I'll go through those if they are still available to view on eBay and I'll make any changes needed.

Cheers,

Smeg

Here's a picture of my Casino Cart

which is exactly like the Warbirds a few posts up

Btw... No mention of Telegames while the cart is playing...

Thanks, Eric! We did not have that style on the list before now. I'll bet you were really pleased when you opened it up and saw that style of cart!

I have to wonder who the seller was... he/she just added like 5 new styles to our list. :)

Cheers,

Smeg

I was excited... and kind of expected it to be a different cart version. I've been watching a Warbirds on ebay for about 1 year... perhaps close to 2 years now. Sealed... and everything. I suspect it is the same situation (Flat Black Cart). I've been trying to get the seller to lower the cost, and they flat out will not do it. I just bought it... not happy... but I'm taking that gamble to see if it is a flat black cart.

I still have not seen a Checkered Flag in this style (as rumored above)

So you took a chance and hopefully it'll pay off. Good luck! Let me know.

Yes, that Checkered Flag is an elusive one.

Also, I just reread through the posts here and I had forgotten (until now) to add Green PCB 2 to Remnant. Do you think you could post a pic of your Remnant cart, Eric? I'd love to see it.

How intersting, Eric! You took a gamble and ended up with a completely new Warbirds design! I just added it to the list as Green PCB 1, since it looks like a lot of the later green PCB releases. In fact, if it hadn't come in the official packaging (with the official, boring label), I'd probably assume it was a bootleg.

It's also cool to see my first long board Remnant.

Your collection must be huge by now, Eric! How many carts do you have? Can you even count that high? :D

Thanks for sharing,

Smeg

I'm up to 129 different carts.... not counting Protos, Japanese Boxed Games, Blister Pack Games

If I count protos I am up to 146 (I can't really count the blister packs and Japanese boxed games... at they are the same carts styles... different boxes)...

Keep in mind... I've sold 8 protos in the past few years

Still chugging along for the elusive goal of as many cart variants as possible.

I still need roughly 45 carts thanks to my obsessive collecting habits

I was upset when I first opened it, as I thought it was a bootleg. But I assume Telegames made a few batches like this.

I think I will download the Slime World proto and share it with others on the board soon.
