It seems like the first screen is harder than the rest, which is out of the norm for an Atari game. The first screen doesn't have much speed differential between the columns. The later levels usually have one or two columns that move super slow, which is ideal for hovering back and forth in that column until the rest of the way becomes clear.

I agree this is odd, and, at first, I didn't like it. Now, however, I'm starting to enjoy the idea because it means that having a good first board is what can set up a good game (provided you get through the next few too), which is unlike other games where you do the same easy boards over and over before you can start practicing the tougher levels.
