I can't believe I missed Ghost Manor.... I was playing it last week even! Kinda outta season, but still that should have been an indicator even more. Hmm... Could one of those munchy things in Tunnel Runner be a boss? Or hell... The damn Aircraft Carrier in River Raid II is hard as dry beans to land on! That's driving me nuts tonight. Can that be a boss?!?

Living Room Arcade
Six years later Jutland Skies! Has two bosses, the Red Baron's plane and the armored vehicle. Chuck Norris Superkicks - Ninja inside the monastery I compiled the list from this thread (omitting the ones that seemed to be unsure like Dragonfire and Asteroids and Space Invaders). (Personally, I'm counting homebrews. If you're not, just disregard them, I guess.) IMO to be a boss battle, it should be life and death! And you shouldn't be able to advance to the next level without beating it. If you are in no danger of dying or you can advance without beating it, then IMO it isn't a real boss battle. Anguna (5 bosses) (homebrew) Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom (mothership) Carrot Kingdom (3 bosses) (homebrew) Chuck Norris Superkicks (Ninjas) Desert Falcon (Howling Sphynx) Double Dragon (Shadow Boss) Dragonstomper Escape from the Mind Master Fantastic Voyage (Blood Clot - 15 shots needed to destroy it!) Frankenstein's Monster (Frankenstein's monster) Front Line (fort) Ghost Manor (Dracula) Ghostbusters (Stapuff Marshmallow Man) Gizzle Wap (7 mini bosses, Invica Nymphs, and one final boss, Invicta Prime) (homebrew) GORF Jutland Skies (Red Baron and armored vehicle) (homebrew) Krull Kung Fu Master Laser Gates? Off the Wall Oysterion (homebrew) Phoenix Princess Rescue (homebrew) Radar Lock Saboteur Sentinel Sinistar (the Sinistar) Sir Lancelot (dragon) Space Game (4 bosses) (homebrew) Space Raid (homebrew) Spy Hunter (helicopter) Star Trek (N.O.M.A.D.) Stay Frosty (1 or 2?) (homebrew) Subterranea Survival Run (Alien Command Ship) Time Pilot (boss at end of each level) Vanguard (Gond) Wizard of Wor (Wizard) Zaxxon What does everybody this of this updated list of BOSS FIGHT games for Atari 2600? It would be nice if we could perfect this list by naming all the bosses for each game. (Some are already listed.) Notes Beamrider - IMO the sector bosses are not real boss battles since they can't kill you. (You can just ignore them, let them fly by.) Congo Bongo (? - 3rd screen, you always win) IMO not a boss battle if you always win Star Wars: The Arcade Game (Death Star - Trench) - IMO the Trench is not a boss, it's just a location. Star Wars Return of the Jedi: Death Star Battle (Death Star) Yes, you must blow up the death star, but is it really a boss? Xevious (Andor Genesis) <-- Which version has this? It says the Zeviouz 7800 port lacks the mothership battle. Edited March 24 by Living Room Arcade
Living Room Arcade
Sorry, I can't edit my previous post. (You can disregard my previous post. This post supersedes that one.) I worked on this a little more. I went through the game manuals and confirmed the bosses for each game. At this time, I count 22 commercial releases and 8 homebrews with boss fights for Atari 2600. So what do you guys think of my revised list? Boss Battle: Must be life or death; you must defeat the boss to advance in the game. Commercial Releases: Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom (mothership) Chuck Norris Superkicks (Ninja in monastery) Desert Falcon (Howling Sphynx) Double Dragon (Shadow Boss) Escape from the Mind Master (Mind Master - Five Tests) Fantastic Voyage (Blood Clot - 15 shots needed to destroy it!) Frankenstein's Monster (Frankenstein's monster) Ghost Manor (Dracula) GORF (Gorfian Flag Ship) Krull (Beast) Kung Fu Master (The Five Biggies) Phoenix (Alien Spaceship) Saboteur (Master Robot) Sentinel (evil entity) Sinistar (the Sinistar) Sir Lancelot (dragon, Hanek the Horrible) Star Trek (NOMAD) Survival Run (Alien Command Ship) Time Pilot (boss at end of each level) Vanguard (Gond) Wizard of Wor (the Wizard of Wor, himself) Zaxxon - (robot Zaxxon) Homebrews: Anguna (5 bosses) Carrot Kingdom (3 bosses) Gizzle Wap (7 mini bosses, Invica Nymphs, and one final boss, Invicta Prime) Jutland Skies (Red Baron and armored vehicle) Princess Rescue (boss battle w/ BJ every 4 levels) Space Game (4 bosses) Space Raid (Master Robots) Stay Frosty 2 (Looks like a giant blue fireball) My Notes: IMO Not a Boss Fight: Front Line (a fort is not a boss), Star Wars The Arcade Game (a trench is not a boss), Ghostbusters (Marshmallow Man cannot kill you; you just lose some money), Off the Wall (You don't have to defeat the dragon, you can just finish breaking the wall, instead), Oystron (you can let Oystron go without defeating it) Not Sure If It's a Boss Fight or Not: Dragonstomper (I've never played this game, must you face the Dragon in a boss battle in the Dragon Cave?), Laser Gates (I'm sure the Failsafe Detonators are tough to destroy, but is that a boss battle?), Radar Lock (the super bombers look tough, but is that a boss battle?), Spy Hunter (the helicopter looks tough, but is it a boss battle?), SWROTJ Death Star Battle (sure, you must blow up the death star, but is that a boss battle?), Subterranea (the Hexuplex sends Aerobots to kill you, but is that a boss battle?) +Gemintronic
My game Nitebear on Sleepystreet has a huge, alien frog boss that spits fireballs at ya on level 8. Also, at the end of most stages is a mini boss as an homage to Knightmare: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/169496-nitebear-on-sleepystreet/ Thought it was pretty neat to use the playfield for the frog boss like what they did in Blaster Master on Nintendo. Was not as proud of the mini bosses since paradoxically making their shots move faster and wider made them easier to dodge somehow.

(According to the manual... it's the game where HE comes home!) Thank you, @CaptainBreakout Well, I have never played this game. Here is the manual. Can you (or anybody here who is familiar with this game) talk about whether or not they think the battles with the Killer would be considered boss battles? Boss Battle - Criteria: A) The boss(es) should be "Bigger 'n' Badder" than ordinary enemies. B) The boss battle(s) must be life or death. Either you die or the boss dies. One of you dies. C) You must defeat the boss to advance further in the game. Edited April 5 by Living Room Arcade
