electronizer
I came across a bag of random ICs in some boxes of Atari stuff I acquired last year. I sorted out all the unique chips and straightened a lot of bent pins. Here's what I have: The gold and ceramic IC marked "proto" is apparently a 2600 Defender chip (CO12009). Anything else of interest here?
_The Doctor__
I'd use them to repair a number of Atari's rom carts... though the CTIA's aren't super useful... they can get you by in a pinch... +Nezgar
CO12295 CTIA (predecessor of GTIA) would have been pulled from early Atari 800's, and may be of interest to some for historical purposes.I'd hazard a guess, at 24 pins, these are mostly 2KB or 4KB ROM's, like you mentioned, for 2600 games... electronizer
CTIA is very rare and worth some good money. There are also undocumented behaviours of this chip that need to be investigated. If I wanted to test the CTIA chips could I just plug them into any 400 or 800 CPU board? Or does it have to be a certain revision? Is there currently an effort underway to better replicate the behavior of CTIA in an emulator?
Kyle22
There should have been a C011223F version made. Frog baseball.
Rybags
CTIA should be directly exchangable with the NTSC GTIA. Common belief is that there was never a PAL CTIA. The most prominent known difference is that artifact colours are supposed to be different and unlike differences among machines it is supposed to originate at the chip. Also there is supposed to be some difference with positioning of PM graphics though it would need further investigation. Of course GTIA modes won't work on CTIA, you'll just get Graphics 8 with the pixels plotted improperly. But the OS supported GTIA modes from the original revision.
ijor
Also there is supposed to be some difference with positioning of PM graphics though it would need further investigation. I think we confirmed the behaviour long ago. The difference is the alignment (one half cycle) between hires on one side, and both lorez and players on the other. And the different artifacts is just a consequence of this alignment. We have die shots of CTIA, but only for the top layer. It is difficult to read the complete silicon layout without delayering (removing the top metal layer). It would be nice if another CTIA could be saved for another decap round. The CO12499B "custom ROM" is apparently version B of the 400 OS. Also I wonder if the CO1203202 chip has anything to do with CO12032 Space Invaders?
