jjh76
I seem to remember someone posting a video with the audio from a TI being captured and redirected into a midi device, but I can't find that post now. Was it real or did I just imagine it?

jjh76
thanks, it for the et-peb, but for some reason I was thinking tipi
+arcadeshopper
No midi with TIPI .. yet I have midiout from the ti with rs232 we have midiout through the TIPI on our radar but not even started yet Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
Omega-TI
That would be awesome using the RPi 3B plus and a Bluetooth speaker.
jjh76
Would it be possible for the TIPI to do more than just midi? Like maybe have it send commands to a Sound Blaster or Adlib emulator running on the Pi? And then route the output back through the expansion port's audio pass through? +jedimatt42
The TIPI does not connect anything in terms of audio signals on the PI or the TI. The side port TIPI does extend the audio feed to the header connector. New data channels like the TCP access can be extended with just a little python, or you could just run a service on the PI that listens to TCP.. I've never used a MIDI device... This is an area I'm interested in, but know nothing about. -M@
+acadiel
We can likely use the UberGROM with Midi. It does have a serial port, after all. All we need is software
jjh76
Does the TI do any processing on the input from audio line on the side port, or does it just pass it directly to the audio pin on the av cable? In other words, if you took an audio cable, stuck one end into the trrs jack on the PI 3B+, then modified the other end to connect it to the audio input pin on the TIPI, could you then start up a music player on the PI and have it play through the TI's audio out?
+jedimatt42
I believe the answer is yes (you can), but you should check schematics for the console to determine correct levels. And remember, the TI speech synth blocks this line, so you have to mod in a jumper across to carry it through. -M@
Asmusr
Does the TI do any processing on the input from audio line on the side port, or does it just pass it directly to the audio pin on the av cable? I think it's connected the audio-in pin of the sound chip.
jjh76
Eh, maybe I just haven't used the right search terms, but I can't find anything on the audio input line. I've found a few sites that mention it, but no actual data on how it works.
Tursi
You could look at the schematics... but according to http://www.unige.ch/medecine/nouspikel/ti99/tms9919.htmit runs through a 330 ohm resistor. It's just an analog input, and you should use the sound chip's datasheet to see what it's expecting. You can see a description of the cassette input side of the circuit here: http://www.unige.ch/medecine/nouspikel/ti99/cassette.htm The Bunyard hardware manual from WHTech has a copy of the schematics - here attached. bunyard-hardware-manual-for-the-texas-instruments-994a.pdf

But to answer this, the answer is 'essentially yes'. The audio runs through the sound chip and is mixed there, but there are no gates between the side port and the audio output, so as long as the level is correct it should be heard. jjh76
Thanks for the links, but attempting to load any TI related pages from unige.ch all I get is a 404: page not found. Tried looking through that pdf, but I know nothing about deciphering schematics so it's all a bit beyond me.

+Lee Stewart
Thanks for the links, but attempting to load any TI related pages from unige.ch all I get is a 404: page not found. Tried looking through that pdf, but I know nothing about deciphering schematics so it's all a bit beyond me. The links work for me. If you are cutting and pasting or typing them, you must include everything through “ti99” or a search is unlikely to find the tech pages. Edit: The second link is malformed. Here it is again: http://www.unige.ch/medecine/nouspikel/ti99/cassette.htm. Also, you must click on the link because AtariAge often reduces the displayed size by replacing part of the full link with an ellipsis. For example, the last link in full, with ‘/’ replaced with ‘|’ to prevent AA’s shortening, is http:||www.unige.ch|medecine|nouspikel|ti99|cassette.htm. ...lee
jjh76
OK, the problem is that the pages use plain http, but firefox keeps trying to connect in https mode which is causing the server to reply with the 404.....
jjh76
After asking about the trrs jack on the pi board I've done a little experiment. I picked up a mono audio cable and a socket. Soldered some leads to socket and connected it to the audio in and one of the ground pins on the TIPI. Telnetted into the PI and installed omxplayer, which I then used to play a few mp3's through the TI's audio out. Seemed to be working fine at first, but halfway through one of the mp3's the TIPI telnet app froze the TI and the music cut off. After rebooting the TI everything seems fine so I'm not sure what that was about Edited August 12, 2018 by jjh76
