RIP Dickey Betts. Incredible song writer, great guitarist and a HUGE influence. The Allman Brothers Band is my all-time favorite band. Rest in peace to one of the last Brothers (Jaimoe is the only original member left).

Great guitarist from a great band.  He outlived Duane by a few decades at least.  What is your favorite song of theirs?

Unpopular and Controversial Opinions, Volume 22:
-'80s British Stop-motion cartoons > most American cartoons from that decade.
-Frank Zappa's music has aged gracefully.
-On the other hand, Green Day still sucks.
-While I abhor their employee treatment, Konami is trying to amend their credibility. Credibility that was ruined when Kojima was company Vice President.
-Grandia II = What Final Fantasy VII should have been.
-Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry > MGM's Tom & Jerry. (Fun fact: Tom in the MGM cartoons was originally called Jasper and Jerry was called Jinx.)
-Metal Gear Solid 2 is like the PS1 Masterpiece that preceded it but bad.
-Speaking of Grandia, I still recommend Monochrome Mobius, Child of Light, and Terra Memoria.
-I'm glad that John K Bacchus is still working on Mega Man X: Corrupted.
-Of all the games released under the PS2 Sega Ages 2500 line, Space Harrier was the best one.

I'm not sure "Frank Zappa's music has aged gracefully" is an unpopular opinion. If you're a Zappa fan, it's timeless. If you don't like it or don't get it, you probably felt that way from the start. Incidentally, I just watched my Zappa Plays Zappa DVD for the first time in quite a while. Incredible stuff.
    • RetroSonicHero

Hot take: upscaling 3D PS1/Saturn/N64 games to high resolutions on emulators does not look better, and actually leads to artistic inconsistency.

The low resolution of the games helped hide some of the shortcomings, such as low poly models and low detail textures. Upscaling these games to HD only accentuates these problems, and makes the games look artistically incoherent. On one hand, you have a super high resolution game. On the other hand, the textures are so low resolution that you can count the pixels. It doesn't look natural at all.

Edit: This also doesn't include other stuff such as lighting and basic environment detail. Which can also look very odd and baren at high resolutions.
      1. Show previous replies  3 more
      2. RetroSonicHero

Exactly that, too. Hud elements were often low res, which looks odd when the rest is upscaled.
      3. dudeguy

always felt this way. curiously, in the manual for Motor Toon Grand Prix, it said the best way to play the game was S-video cable on as big of a screen as possible
      4. RetroSonicHero

@dudeguy Fascinating! I don't ever recall a game manual recommending a specific type of video cable. Apart from explaining how to plug in/use the console, of course.
      5. dudeguy

@RetroSonicHero Yeah, I peruse manuals once in a great while. lots of great info to be learned. it's sad that games have mostly done away with them
      6. MarcoJ

indeed. I swear quake looks better on 320x200 than 640x480 and higher. Something about those lowpoly models gets obfuscated by the low res, it's like a impressionist painting technique.

I was up late but I managed to come up with a formula for determining how much I need to sell a game for on eBay to walk away, breaking even, adjusted for inflation. I kept track of a lot of the games prices of what I originally paid for. Many of them I will have to just ballpark it. I'll come out either ahead or break even on a good chunk of my games, and lose my shirt on a handful of them. it's sad but unfortunately, life happens and bills need to get paid. I haven't touched a video game in months, it's just money sitting around collecting dust at this point. gonna take a long time to go through all of it

    • I don't know. It's already a mirecle™️ pdubs only created one...   Regarding the lack of connection with the original game, it's not that surprising to me and I think we will see more of this from Atari in the future. As we discussed before many times, Atari franchises didn't evolve regularly like Nintendo ones did. So it's very difficult to envision what would a Yars' Revenge game look like in 2024 if other games in the series had regularly been released for the past 40 years... It would have probably evolved quite a lot from the OG, great but basic formula, even though I agree it wouldn't be a Metroid-like. That's why I'm not entirely positive about the game; WayForward just picked the genre they master the most (or Atari asked them to), which is a bit lazy imho. And it was done to death, so I'm personally not excited at all, especially since I don't like the anime style either.   WayForward is a talented developer but I don't like everything they've done. But using Advance Wars as an example is dumb since it's a remaster; the content is basically unchanged from the original Intelligent Systems games, and only the art style is new. It's OK to dislike it, but it really corresponds to WayForward's style so there's no reason they might have "improved" since, on the contrary.
    • The 9901 interrupt pin was an interesting gotcha too... I accidentally turned on interrupts on the joystick left line when I added the SID Blaster support to Super Space Acer.   I didn't realize it was interrupts until I asked ArcadeShopper to try it and he reported that it lit up the PEB.   Basically, I was turning on the SID blaster by writing to the keyboard column select at CRU 24. But, I accidentally wrote >24.   The result was holding left would freeze the game while the console ROM tried to figure out which DSR asked for an interrupt. Since Classic99 didn't support 9901 pin interrupts, there was no real help there. >24 is 36, but the CRU pin space is only 32 bits long, and Classic99 also wasn't wrapping the address around in that space like it was supposed to. (Bit at address 4 is joystick left.) Soooo.. those two changes to the 9901 code came out of my needing several days to figure that out.    Though it's kind of neat to know that yes, joystick and keyboard inputs can trigger interrupts.

    • I never thought I would build a DOS gaming machine - but I saw the Micro 8088 project and thought it was neat.  I get to truly build my own PC, not by plugging boards into an old PC but from the chip level. So I am currently building out a system - I am going to use the NEC V20 processor and a 8087-1 math co processor.   Here is a photo of the 3D printed case, I printed and a Sound card installed (I did not build the Sound Card) - I am still waiting on some of the parts (so many parts) I ordered to get here.
    • This update is worth mentioning - file system fix. It's a gotcha.   Classic99 399.069   This fixes a detection issue accessing DF128 headerless on FIAD if any part of your disk path contains a period (assuming an extension exists, which isn't allowed). It was checking the entire path instead of just the filename.    Note you can always bypass that restriction using the ".?X" option (ie: DSK1.?X.WIN.EXE would allow opening an exe as DF128).   Also: mute "Skipped 0 sentences on shut up" message (we don't care if it was 0) fixed case of DLL load on FilterDLL.dll and hq4xdll.dll for those running from case sensitive filesystems. (If you renamed the DLLs, you may have to rename them back). emit a warning in the debug log if loading a DSR to an invalid CRU base correct address wraparound in the 9901 address mapping add interrupt pin warning to debug log in the 9901 emulation (Classic99 does not support 9901 hardware interrupts) don't spam the same debug statement repeatedly to the log (note: no timeout. If you NEED to see a repeated statement, force another one in between. For instance, press Control to get the speech clear debug) also note the external debugger (debugview) is NOT filtered this way, so that you have best visibility there Given that bug has been in there since I first added DF128 headerless support, it's probably a pretty obscure case.
