RIP Dickey Betts. Incredible song writer, great guitarist and a HUGE influence. The Allman Brothers Band is my all-time favorite band. Rest in peace to one of the last Brothers (Jaimoe is the only original member left).
      1. jeremiahjt

Great guitarist from a great band.  He outlived Duane by a few decades at least.  What is your favorite song of theirs?
      2. BydoEmpire

Hard to pick a favorite. My favorite Dickey song is probably Blue Sky. Favorite ABB song... I don't know. Whipping Post? Dreams? Liz Reed?

Back Where It All Begins is my favorite studio record. It's the one that got me into the band in the first place so it has a special place.

Unpopular and Controversial Opinions, Volume 22:
-'80s British Stop-motion cartoons > most American cartoons from that decade.
-Frank Zappa's music has aged gracefully.
-On the other hand, Green Day still sucks.
-While I abhor their employee treatment, Konami is trying to amend their credibility. Credibility that was ruined when Kojima was company Vice President.
-Grandia II = What Final Fantasy VII should have been.
-Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry > MGM's Tom & Jerry. (Fun fact: Tom in the MGM cartoons was originally called Jasper and Jerry was called Jinx.)
-Metal Gear Solid 2 is like the PS1 Masterpiece that preceded it but bad.
-Speaking of Grandia, I still recommend Monochrome Mobius, Child of Light, and Terra Memoria.
-I'm glad that John K Bacchus is still working on Mega Man X: Corrupted.
-Of all the games released under the PS2 Sega Ages 2500 line, Space Harrier was the best one.

Grandia II = What Final Fantasy VII should have been. 💪
      2. BydoEmpire

I'm not sure "Frank Zappa's music has aged gracefully" is an unpopular opinion. If you're a Zappa fan, it's timeless. If you don't like it or don't get it, you probably felt that way from the start. Incidentally, I just watched my Zappa Plays Zappa DVD for the first time in quite a while. Incredible stuff.
    • RetroSonicHero

Hot take: upscaling 3D PS1/Saturn/N64 games to high resolutions on emulators does not look better, and actually leads to artistic inconsistency.

The low resolution of the games helped hide some of the shortcomings, such as low poly models and low detail textures. Upscaling these games to HD only accentuates these problems, and makes the games look artistically incoherent. On one hand, you have a super high resolution game. On the other hand, the textures are so low resolution that you can count the pixels. It doesn't look natural at all.

Edit: This also doesn't include other stuff such as lighting and basic environment detail. Which can also look very odd and baren at high resolutions.

always felt this way. curiously, in the manual for Motor Toon Grand Prix, it said the best way to play the game was S-video cable on as big of a screen as possible
      3. RetroSonicHero

@dudeguy Fascinating! I don't ever recall a game manual recommending a specific type of video cable. Apart from explaining how to plug in/use the console, of course.
      4. dudeguy

@RetroSonicHero Yeah, I peruse manuals once in a great while. lots of great info to be learned. it's sad that games have mostly done away with them
      5. MarcoJ

indeed. I swear quake looks better on 320x200 than 640x480 and higher. Something about those lowpoly models gets obfuscated by the low res, it's like a impressionist painting technique.

I was up late but I managed to come up with a formula for determining how much I need to sell a game for on eBay to walk away, breaking even, adjusted for inflation. I kept track of a lot of the games prices of what I originally paid for. Many of them I will have to just ballpark it. I'll come out either ahead or break even on a good chunk of my games, and lose my shirt on a handful of them. it's sad but unfortunately, life happens and bills need to get paid. I haven't touched a video game in months, it's just money sitting around collecting dust at this point. gonna take a long time to go through all of it

    • Haha, I got one of those old-school Dymo label makers for Christmas as a kid and got a little carried away.  I think my parents quickly regretted that purchase!     I get what you mean re: history...it is kind of a cool feeling.  Quite a few of my 2600 carts were "personalized" by their previous owners.
    • Odd.  I'm certain I had it working.  I also had another Logitech keyboard that worked fine, but I replaced it with a new mechanical keyboard that is also wireless and that works fine too.
    • Whoa whoa, low blow, low blow! At least the Simpsons game was playable and there was actual hit detection. It just mainly suffered from the incomprehensible, no-good, awfully horrible first level.
    • Is that Dave Hughes of ZX Spectrum fame or one of the other Dave Hughes?
    • Thanks for the suggestion, I have a couple of ideas to try out.
    • And finally the port is complete and it runs really fine. Current version is V1 Beta, I will not add anything more for the moment but fixing bugs if I found any. The game misses the possibility to add new hiscores, this could be an easy addon taking the code from other games of mine but I don't want to see a full working digital rom shared on warez sites 😉.      I'm not going to release the game now, I will only share it with some friends of mine that will help me to test it and with James of @ZeroPage Homebrew, just in case he wants to play the game again on his twitch channel. I kindly ask who will receive this game to not share with anyone else the rom.the game.    As a precaution I added a disclaimer in the title screen, it should be enough      While waiting for the possibility to acquire a license from Epyx I'll work on an alternate layout of the game that could allow me to release or sell the game without copyright problems. If I will get an official license the new graphic could be added as an alternate version of the game.   This is a quick mockup of how the new gfx could look:
    • No. So that it's accessible to as many people as possible, I'm sticking to a regular cart format. In this case a 128K supercart with16K RAM as used by Epyx in their Summer Games and Winter Games.   Not that I've extensively tested it, but it seems to run OK under ProSystem. It also seems to run well on Concerto, just some minor glitching on the title screen.
    • @DZ-Jay I think I will post my upcoming questions about IMT in this thread, since the other thread was mainly about an "editor" for the IMT format.   I am now able to convert Goat Tracker files to IMT file description. It works quite well in my test program, where I just load and play a song. However, when putting the routines into my game (I use IntyBASIC), only the very first note is triggered and the tracker does not continue, even though I CALL TRKPLAY in every frame.   Does the tracker require the music to be in a specific region in memory? At the moment, all my data (cards, sprites, level, IMT music) starts at $E000 since otherwise I dont have enough memory for my code.
    • Probably my favourite genre of game.   Definitely my favourite NES game. I no longer have the NES so these days I get to play it on the Rare Replay collection.
    • Yes, but while it is fun in Space Invaders (game becoming frantic after some time), it is not appropriate in a game like ABL. And speed coding is always cheating If you want to make clean stuff, you end up with the skeleton of your project, and nothing more after 24 hours.
