A Karateka remake is under way for Xbox 360 and PS3! It's among my favorite 8-bit games, but, like Archon for years, will be a challenge to get exactly right.

Well, eventually they got Archon right, with Archon Classic, so, like I mentioned, we can look to that example for some hope. Mechner has been saying all the right things in interviews, so there's reason to be hopeful with the Karateka remake.
