I'm beginning to understand all of the Apple hatred that's out there... my new Mac Mini is effectively DOA. It won't stop kernel panicking, despite doing multiple clean-reinstalls of the OS (multiple, because it would fail to complete some of them). It could be the third-party RAM I installed, but the alternative was paying an extra $300 in Apple RAM Extortion Fees™. So now I get the joy of opening the thing back up, and reinstalling the stock 8GB.

I'm a willing servant to iOS, but the prices on Mac stuff is just extortionate. The laptops are nice, but the specs-to-performance on the Mini? FFFFFFFFffffffffffffffforget that stuff.

You're right, it's probably your ram. I would only buy from other world computing.

I bought my RAM from Data Memory Systems. We've used them for hundreds of Macs at work over the course of many years.

I've had to do tech support for my mom's Mac Mini and it's usually either the WiFi not connecting right or the way the OS update screwed things up. She ended up having to take it to an Apple repair place and get a new hard drive that was worn out.

From experience, Macs are 'not' PC's! You're better off taking them to authorized repair places to change memory chips since you need the exact right type of RAM chips. And yes it's a pain in the wa...

My new Mac Mini left Hong Kong at 8:26 PM, 2/11/19, and arrived in Anchorage, Alaska at 3:25 PM, 2/11/19 – five hours earlier. At this rate it will get here yesterday!

I shouldn't have mocked Apple in my status update the other day... just a few hours after I did, my iMac died. I'm flattered they apparently read my profile feed... but that's just mean-spirited.

At the moment, it's working again. Maybe because I spent money at the Apple store last night on a couple of new hard drives, and I appeased their wrath.

Spoke too soon. Still randomly shutting down. Now I have to figure out if I want to pay money to fix a seven-year-old iMac, or pay money to buy a "brand-new" one that hasn't been updated in two years.

Dear Apple: If it will help you make a new Mac Pro, I'll happily send you a bag of screws. https://www.macrumors.com/2019/01/28/2013-mac-pro-postponed-us-screw-shortage/

Not impossible, just not efficient. We don't have anything at the scale of Shenzhen's manufacturing.

We don't *right now*. But neither did China before Apple started partnering with the manufacturers there to ramp up production scale.

Notice that the US manufacturer was able to produce at scale before, they just reduced production, staff, and retooled because all USA manufacturers left for China. If they come back, why couldn't they do it again?

It will take an investment, but not different than the original investment put into China.

It's also worth remembering that in America, workers won't (generally) work themselves to death. In Shenzhen they don't get a choice.

Well, that's the last time I'm ever using PrimeTime airport shuttles. Five minutes after they were supposed to pick me up to leave for the airport, they called me and canceled my ride. No backup driver, no offer to find an alternative, nothing. Had to call a cab to get a last minute ride. Not a great way to start a vacation, but at least I did make my flight.

I never had a problem with SuperShuttle. I'm sure there are cheaper options, but they were extremely reliable for me when I was traveling frequently for business.

I never have convinced myself to try the Uber/Lyft thing.

I'd like to believe that the reason the DMV is so horrible to deal with is that they have a terribly difficult, complicated job to do, and it's not because they're incompetent and/or they hate people. I'd like to believe that anyway...
