I'm setting up an experiment on Friday afternoon: how "doesn't understand" relates to "doesn't want to understand".

    Supposedly the phrase "the penny has dropped" was established in print by Daily Mirror in the 1930's, but it also says the phrase only is known in Europe, not America.

    "penny drop" is British. I think the closest thing we have is "wait for the other shoe to drop" which isn't quite the same. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/wait_for_the_other_shoe_to_drop
