Just got a PS3 and whats the deal with the controller?

Finally got one. I also picked up a memory card adapter, extra controller and Resistance. No I'm not rich but I did save up to get this stuff. :P

So far I'm pretty impressed except for the following:

- The controller is awful and slips out of my hand. Is it smaller than the dual shock2? Also, it seems the controller gets stuck in a position and I see my character moving even when I am not doing anything. It hasn't happened much since I downloaded the latest update so hopefully thats fixed. I read that all the units had this problem.

- The price tag for all the games is crazy. $60 for Untold Legends? Please.....

- Lack of any interesting games.

- The Playstation Store has a really loooong way to go. Xbox Live just rips Sony's online effort to shreds right now.

I like this beast though...just hoping they get going on the games.

well, it is lighter than the dual shock so maybe that's the problem.

as for the moving around problem, it might be you turned on the system/controller while the analog stick was being pushed.

I dont think it will play Divx but it will play MPEG files and few others. Heres the list from the Playstation site. I wish it did more. :|

The following types of files can be played under (Video).

Memory Stick Video Format

MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)

H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)

MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)

MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)

MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)

I was thinking about picking up a Blue Ray movie but I may wait for something I really want. I dont have a 1080p capable HD TV so Im in wait.

If you're going to get a Blu-Ray movie for the PS3, I highly recommend going to AVS Forum and check out their movie ratings. Not all Blu-Ray's are created equal and some are really outstanding while some look no better than a regular DVD.

I own two Blu-Ray movies: Superman Returns and Kung Fu Hustle. Both are FANTASTIC on Blu-Ray and well worth the $20 each they cost me.

Ok, I might just have dreamt about the DivX playback. Maybe it's possible to install a DivX player somehow, or maybe it will be later on in the life of the PS3. Have you tried to use it for media playback? I am just curious how the interface handles, if it's user friendly. For instance I hated DVD playback on the PS2, just too inconvenient to use a hand controller as a remote.

Thanks for the link to the blue ray ratings..

------------

I have played movies and CD's on it and its SOOOO much better.

Yes, the PS2 was really clunky. As a matter of fact, I'm not even going to bother with a PS3 remote. Im real happy just using the controller.

Thats how much better it is when compared to the PS2.

I even read somewhere that the PS3 is probably one of the best DVD\Blue Ray players out there.

I highly recommend getting the Nyko controller recharger:

Nyko

It can charge two controllers (with two USB cables that are not included). I just plug my controllers to this when Im not playing and they are always charged.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray

It is the same as HD-DVD. There are three supported codecs: MPEG4 (H.264), VC1, and MPEG2. The hd movie is not guaranteed to be in one particular format. As is stated in the article most BD movies currently use MPEG2 (at a much higher bitrate then DVD) and most HD-DVD movies currently use VC1. Players are required to support the three codecs.

Does DivX work in Linux? If it does, then loading Linux on the PS3 would do it.

The shoulder buttons on the controller are also tilted inward. Stinky. I was hoping the forthcoming Logitech wireless controller would be a decent alternative, but the reviews of their wired controller are unanimously awful. Oh well.

As for the games, Motorstorm is coming, what, next week? The downloadable demo looks and plays better than the in-store demo. I'm looking forward to this title.

Thx Hyper_Eye for the info. I thought I searched Wiki already for codec info, must have missed that article somehow, oh well :) .

So can you just install Linux apps on the PS3, like Mplayer? I don't know anything about Linux myself, but I can imagine it would be plenty nice to be able to do that...

I thought PS3 has a built in memory card? It saved my game status in Resistance after I turned it off.

Also when I get a second controller how do I hook it up just put another cord in the second spot? Also once the controllers are set up do u have to keep the cord in or can you take it out?

Thanks hopefully someone can help me with this.

1. PS3s have different hard drive sizes depending on what version you bought. PS3 games save without any extra effort to this hard drive. PS1 and PS2 games require you to create "virtual memory cards" on the drive and select which virtual card you want in the virtual slots.

2. The explanation on how to synchronize another controller is in the manual. After the controllers are set up and charged, you can disconnect the cable. Doing a system update requires you to connect the controller again.

I didn't see it in the manual for more than one controller just one.
