Paranoid Posted March 1, 2007 Share Posted March 1, 2007 Drove by an Estate sale in my neighborhood today... I was going to stop, then drove by. Later on, I was going by and thought, "what the hell". As I thought it was an elderly person's house. But there was something going on. There were some burnt CDs (PIL, the Police)... an old PB computer, and a PS-1. They wanted $20 for the PS1, so I passed. Wasn't sure what was in it... a jumble of boxes. I think the guy said there were two in there. I can't imagine paying more than $5 for two of them, and I didn't want to argue with the guy, so I didn't even bother. On the way out, I saw a pong type dedicated game in a bin. Radio Shack TV Scoreboard. Looks like an old Motorola phone. Target, Skeet, Tennis, Hockey, Squash, and Practice. It has a plug at the top makred "PISTOL". It is a DIN-5. Paranoid Posted March 2, 2007 Author Share Posted March 2, 2007 (edited) I was going to go back and look for the gun, but I'm almost certain I saw nothing that looked like a revolver with a cord coming from it. There's the "gay blue" one, with another TV Scoreboard behind it (TV Scoreboard was more of a brand name by Tandy/Radio Shack, with a series of them put out). The boxes are in the stacks behind them. If you have any of the other pong consoles that have a gun, you've got the same thing. Most of the pong clones at the time used GI's AY-3-8500 "pong on a chip", which included 2 shooting games. In fact, a lot of the consoles used this chip and just didn't provide peripheral support for the gun, hence the two shooting games are still in there and just not used. Not quite like that, though I've run across many that have big, bold, bright colors that remind me of the single piece plastic molded chairs of the 70's. Like garish orange and red colors. The chip is just precise on what signals it needs for input, not on how that input is sent from the light gun. So while they could have more pins with some just not used, or the same ammount - but even then could have different pin arrangements. Really, all GI did was provide the chip and the specs to operate it. Everyone else was free to do whatever they wanted with everything else. DrLove0378 Posted March 3, 2007 Share Posted March 3, 2007 I got one just like that at Goodwill, so I definitely know what it looks like. Mine came with an AC adapter, but no gun. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that just about any light gun (with a DIN-5 connector) from any old Pong console could probably work. The game machine likely won't know the difference. The gun games on the TV Scoreboard are worth playing, but after you do, you'll probably rarely feel compelled to ever do so again. The guns themselves seem tough to find for some reason. Two models existed: model 60-3060 which only played four games (no target shooting) and model 60-3061 which played the two target shooting games in addition to the four pong variants. The game chip is GI's AY-3-8500. This game is often found on eBay and sells at quite cheap prices. My dad bought one for my brothers and myself for Christmas sometime in the late '70s I'm sure, before my first 2600.
