Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection.

So, around 6:30 or so last night, Tekken 5:DR finally made it to the PS store for download. Within about 30 minutes I had downloaded the 555 MB file and started playing.

The Good:

1) Just about everything starts out unlocked, just like the PSP version. You don't start with half or less of the characters and then have to play for hours to get the rest.

2) The graphics aren't next gen, but they look very nice at the higher resolutions.

3) Two player Tekken DR without having to own 2 PSPs! :)

The Bad:

1) Since this is a port of the arcade game, the difficulty is a tad higher than previous home Tekkens. This can be frustrating if you're a mere mortal casual player like me.

2) The controls don't feel as tight this time around.

The Nitpicking:

1) There aren't as many play modes in this game as in past home Tekkens. The lack of a Practice mode is a keenly felt absence.

2) The procedure for customizing your character with options is a bit awkward. Not only that, but you don't get to see what you're buying until you've already spent your hard earned winnings.

3) No online play. I imagine this might be added at a later date. I don't categorize it as a bad point because of the generally poor experiences I've had playing fighting games online.

4) At $20 it's pricey for a download. But, it ends up being worth it.

Anyway, I spent a good 3 hour chunk of last night playing. I had to crank it down to Easy though, because I suck. On Normal I'd get to Devil Jin and Jinpachi and get pwned over and over.

I've been slowly becoming a Tekken nut over the years. Its the only fighting game I like, but its making me get into the genre like Oblivion did for me with RPGs. I've yet to purchase the PSP version. After reading what you had to say, I'll most likely get the PSP version over this. Seems insane there is no practice mode. Maybe an update will fix it.

Looks cool but, i'm not paying $20. I won't pay over $10 for a downloaded game. At $20 I need a manual/cd/and case with inserts ans good artwork :)

I used to feel the same way. I've often ranted about the evil plot to move everything to online downloads to prevent everyone from owning a game. As a matter of fact, I still think it's pretty diabolical and doesn't bode well for the future of gaming. But, I've been seduced by the dark side, and here's why:

1) With XBox Live arcade, I discovered that $5, and even sometimes $20, is a trivial amount to me. I spend more than that each day for breakfast or lunch. "It's only 5 bucks." When I look at it that way as opposed to "If I wanted to download all the games included on Midway Arcade Treasures, it would cost $100!" then it doesn't seem bad at all. Collectively it seems stupid, but most of the time I'm looking at things individually, and from that perspective it makes sense.

2) The first convenience aspect is that I don't have to go hunting for the game. I don't have to wait for a few days after the release date for a copy I ordered online to arrive. I don't have to run around town trying to find a store with the game in stock. I just browse the downloadable games, pay my money, download, and then play. There's no hassle. No dealing with some Gamestop idiot, no trying to convince a Wal-Mart employee to open the game case, no standing at the game booth at Toys R Us waiting for the person with the key to come up from the stock room or bathroom or whatever.

3) The other convenience is just having the game available without having to put in a disc. I've become seriously lazy. It's just easier to have a game on the system menu and not have to put a disc in. I just power up the system and pick Tekken from the list and start playing. Another related advantage is no load times. Playing Tekken on my PS3 is blazing fast now. There's no waiting, just the joy of kicking ass.

4) Something I've noticed is that the download services are just offering more games I enjoy. I've downloaded more games for each of my current gen systems than I've purchased discs for them. I find I more often like a game of Geometry Wars or Heavy Weapon on my X360. I definitely enjoy playing Virtual Console games on the Wii I was given more than the disc games for the console. I don't even own any game discs for my PS3 yet. Every game I've bought for the PS3 is a download (Blast Factor, Q-Bert, and Tekken). They're more "pick up and play" types of games, while disc games generally require huge investments of time.

Anyway, those are my current thoughts on the matter. It's a personal thing.

Sony doesn't sell points cards like Nintendo and MS do they? They just have the credit card option correct?

I don't find $20 to be too much for a download but I'd much sooner get some other downloads with my $20 than roll it into one purchase. :) Considering budget games are $20 or so at Wal-Mart... $20 is pretty decent.

Is there leaderboards for this game? Some sort of online scoreboard or stat tracker would be cool.

1) Points cards or credit card. AFAIK, credit card is the only option for the Sony store.

2) online leaderboards/stat tracking. Nope. There's none of that in Tekken:DR. Which is odd because the arcade game was supposed to have had that stuff originally.

Wait. This wouldn't be considered Tekken 5 right? I thought Tekken 5 for the PS2 was a different game compared to Dark Resurrection.

DR is Tekken 5 with more characters, like Armor King. Its disappointing seeing only a ps3 release as I really wanted to get good as Armor King, that and its harder than the PS2 version of Tekken 5. I can beat it on Very Hard... Oh well.
