xrbrevin
i found out the head spring is called "the compliance spring" on one of my drives, i found that the head carriage "band" that attaches to the stepper motor had slack in it - a visible gap at the spindle end. the movement of the motor first took up this slack before moving the carriage, resulting in reduced travel. i tightened it an the gap visibly reduced until barely noticeable but sadly it only improved the drive's reading ability, some disks are still unreadable but its a "step" in the right direction (*groan*) sorry for the bad joke... i need to align the stepper motor on this drive but i dont have an alignment disk so im using trial and error
