Back in the mid-'80's, Canadian Tire sold Atari 2600 cartridges (and consoles). I remember that they also sold Commodore computers (Vic 20, C=64).

As all Canadians will know, despite the name, this is more of a housewares/general hardware store than a place that just sells automotive supplies.

Happy Canada Day!

When I was young and visiting my grand mother in Wisconsin for the summer. She bought me Commando Raid at a Red Owl grocery store for $7.99. I remember they had about 5 games all of them U.S. games.

Later my dad went back and bought me.... *looks around*

Sneak N Peek

Don't let that get around tho.

Was there ever a Atari 2600 game that was put in kid's cereal boxes? I have seen other items like CDs with computer games but I wonder if in the day there was Atari games in kids cereal boxes.

Hehe imagine finding a 2600 Pac-Man in your breakfast. It sure would make me loose my appetite :D Would probably need tons of sugar ...

Actually, you mention Canadian Tire selling 2600 stuff, they always have and still do sell videogame stuff.

I bought a great deal of my Sega Genesis games there, AND even now I remember seeing PSX and PS2 games there... consoles as well

That would be quite a bit of missing cereal!

Anyway, there used to be a drug & food store here called Revco, which had a lot of old-person decorations (y'know -- figurines, music boxes and candles amongst the magazines and school supplies). My mom dragged me there one day, and my eyes, attuned to the merest flash of a 2600 box even back when I was 12, darted to the side of an aisle, where hanging on those little silver hooks that always fall off was what appeared to be the entire VidTec catalogue, plus Seaquest and Cosmic Ark! For 99 CENTS APIECE!! This was '83 or '84, so it must've been just at the beginning of the major industry shake-out. My mom, thankfully, was in a good mood that day...so, later, so was I!! :D

Ah, there is nothing like getting closeout 2600 games back in 1984. I got a ton of M-Network games at Walgreen’s (drug store) in downtown Cincinnati back then.

But of course in the early 90's, there was nothing like getting all those red label Atari games for a buck at All for One (where the price of everything in the store is $1.) Of course I passed up on buying Solaris, because I had never heard of it. :x

strangest place I ever found Atari games for sale? Probably at the Village Pantry near my apartment back in Indianapolis (onlysaw them there twice though)

Strangest place I ever got an Atari cart? A funeral. I gave up Haunted House for Journey Escape when I was 8. JE is still my favorite 2600 game!!

There were no pack-in games with cereals, but I clearly remember a contest or some kind of mail-in offer for PARKER BROS games. If not I'm not mistaken, it was POST cereal brands that ran this program. I think I got my copy of Spiderman this way...

Back in 1999 or 1998 we had hurricane floyd hit the east coast. and up in NJ we ended having it as a tropical storm Philfound would be helpful to verify the year. but i got down roping up the garbage cans making sure they dont fly away. and as i finished what flew and hit my leg...... a Chopper Command Activision cart. i always thought that was a cool thing since i wasnt even looking for it.

There was a local book store that seemed to have all the latest Atari 2600 games back in the early 80s. It was within bike-riding distance. They had a trade-in program where you could bring in old games for credit towards new ones. I think that's where I originally picked up Yars' Revenge and maybe Haunted House.

In the late 80's in the Chicago suburb that I grew up in, there was Mitch's Coin Shop that had Atari carts in the window. They were $2.85 each. Neighborhood kids sold the games to Mitch for him to put in the window. I got a couple games there, but the one that I remember best is Ghostbusters.

He also started brokering toys too- really weird seeing a MIllennium Falcon hanging in the window of a coin shop for $25.
