Because I'm curious, I decided to gather all my 1200XL parts and take a look at the serial numbers in a strange attempt to figure out the quantity made.

If you got a 1200XL, please post your full serial number!

If you are brave enough, please also supply the data on the white sticker typically by the keyboard connector inside the unit.

Some observations:
There were 250 PILOT units made Fall of 82 - Goldberg, Marty and Curt Vendel. Atari, Inc. - Business Is Fun. Carmel: Syzygy, 2012. Print. Page 697
Manufacturing stopped in June 1983 - Atari, Inc. - Goldberg, Marty and Curt Vendel. Atari, Inc. - Business Is Fun. Carmel: Syzygy, 2012. Print. Page 698
Sunnyvale USA Production seems to have ended week 22 of '83: May 30-June 05.
ATMC Taiwan Production seems to have ended week 29 of '83: July 18 - July 24 (somewhat contradicting the above)

I'm calculating dates on the US System where weeks start on Sunday, ISO-8601 has them starting on Monday.  I don't know which Atari used.

There are some patterns that emerge with serial numbers.
Sunnyvale numbers, and there are outliers but an example would be:

Week 06: Serials all start with 010
Week 07: Serials all start with 001 or 020
Week 08: 003
Week 09: 012
Week 10: 009
Week 11: 000, 011, 014
Week 12: 005, 48, 51
Week 13: 0070, 013, 017, 78
Week 14: 007, 016, 79
Week 15: 008, 021, 025
...
Week 21: 024, 028, 029
Week 22: 018, 028

An educated guess, having worked in a manufacturing plant at one time, is that there were at most 4 lines producing the product.  I would say 3 by just looking at the patterns as the 4th could easily be explained by a new role of labels.  Every week other than 13, shows a pattern of 3 serial number variations - so far.  If we use the value of the serials ignoring leading zeros, there are about 80K unique numbers.

As for ATMC, well they are 100% sequential by date and serial: 00099 - 28798, So 29K units made at ATMC. The nice thing about this is we can now figure out what week ATMC units were made that are missing the date stamp.

Total would now be about 110K + 250 PILOT units. This is assuming all the USA serials were actually used.

Table has been updated with calculated values for week date where possible based upon analysis of the data.

Table is sorted by manufacture date:

USA made, BPA83S1200 - Serial# 83S DA 72115 163

Taiwan made, BPA72R1200 - Serial # 72 R DA 01809 153

What do the serial numbers tell us as far as quantities are concerned? We'd have to make some guesses as to where they started numbering, etc.. Also, what is the XX3 number that is stamped on at the end of the serial number represent?

Because I'm curious, I decided to gather all my 1200XL parts and take a look at the serial numbers in a strange attempt to figure out the quantity made. If you got a 1200XL, how about posting the serial? Instead of "Where's George?" we can have "Where's Twelvie?"

Taiwan made, FCC BPA72R1200
72 R DA 02702 163
72 R DA 07009 183
72 R DA 25155 253

USA made, FCC BPA83S1200
83S DA 028453 213

Yes.. I was very surprised to note that there was USA made 1200XL

Made In U.S.A.
83S DA 77266 193

Have another in storage that I'll post origin and s/n for later.

A quick guess as to what the numbers mean...

The first 3 alphanumerics match the FCC code
The next two letters could mean destination country
Next 5 is the real serial number within that series (83S, 72R)
Last three digits could be week and year manufactured.

We could look at 800XL's and verify that since they were sold and made everywhere... or just ask Curt. :)

So, charliecron's serials tell us that the 16th week of 1983, Atari made atleast 1201 (53399-52198) 1200XLs.

The 1200XL was only officially on the market for a few months in 1983. From the FAQ:

"Winter/March: Atari shipped the 1200XL, suggested retail price US$899.
While the 400/800 were produced domestically, the 1200XL and all future Atari
8-bit computers were manufactured overseas."

"June: Atari introduced the 600XL and 800XL home computers at the Summer CES in
Chicago. The 400/800/1200XL would be discontinued."

So, estimating so far, 1200 a week, for say 25 weeks is around 30K units. That doesn't include the combination of both USA and Taiwan units.

Another thing I find interesting is that the US made units started with 6 digits in the SN then went to 5.

With a few more contributions, I could probably plot a graph showing manufacturing timelines.

As for the motherboard, I've only ever seen two versions
1) Light colored board C060585 REV A - "1083" stamped on the board -- this is a bare board I own with no components.
2) Dark colored board C060585 REV 13A - "0383" Stamped on the board, white sticker by RF reads "April 16 1983 B", white sicker by keyboard connector reads "DA 153 REV A" (153 just happens to line up with the 15th week of 1983, April 9th-15th +/- day. I don't know when they started counting)

It would seem mine is quite a young one.

USA made (I didn't know that - now I have 3 USA made Ataris. heavy sixer, 1200XL, and Jaguar). Serial # is 83S DA 000741 113 (the 113 is a stamp, the rest is printed).

Charliecron's 83S DA 005323 123 and Stephen's 83S DA 000741 113 would seem to indicate 4582 units in 14 days. This would seem to indicated about 2200 units a week from the US factory. I have no idea if that is a little or a lot.

There does seem to be some errors however in our numbers or my thinking...

The 1200XL was only officially on the market for a few months in 1983. From the FAQ:

While the 400/800 were produced domestically, the 1200XL and all future Atari

The FAQ will be adjusted, since there were obviously some 1200XL's made in the USA!

Hey Michael, welcome to the board! Is there anyway to get your latest version up at faqs.org, as that one is a few years out of date?

Thanks. Believe me, I wish there was a way.

All I can do is encourage people to use other Usenet FAQ archives that still sync properly with news.answers.

Eventually the problem will go away when the faqs.org domain expires, I suppose.

Grant dates by the FCC:

USA built:

https://gullfoss2.fc...c_id=BPA83S1200

Granted to a J. A. Cook at Atari. Application Dated: 08/31/1982, Date of Grant: 10/18/1982
Sent to C. L. Slease at Electro Service Corp

Taiwan Built:

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/eas/GetEas731Repo...BPA72R1200'

Granted to J. A. Cook at Atari. Application Dated: 02/15/1983, Date of Grant: 03/29/1983
Sent to T. N. Cokenias at Electro Service Corp

I also found a BPA83A1200 -- Dunno where that was made. Application Dated: 07/01/1983, Date of Grant: 09/15/1983. This would seem to imply a 3rd manufacturing location. (BTW, 600XL has three IDs, 800XL has four)

If you go to the main page and just search for BPA as the first 3 characters of the FCC ID you can find 46 matches for things Atari got FCC IDs for from 82-84. http://gullfoss2.fcc...nericSearch.cfm You can also just search for Atari and find about 101 from 1980-2000

Finally got around to checking mine:

72R DA 11169 203
72R DA 12974 203
83S DA 74756 203

What do you suppose the odds were that I'd have three with the last 3 numbers stamped on the label all the same (203)? One in a million by my calculations (of course I'm sure not all numbers were ever used).....guess I better buy a lottery ticket today!

Thanks for the updates JR>. Come on everyone! I still need more numbers. I've actually started asking EBay sellers for their numbers. Sick, I know.

So far the numbers are showing around 100,000 total with some big assumptions.

Because I'm curious, I decided to gather all my 1200XL parts and take a look at the serial numbers in a strange attempt to figure out the quantity made. If you got a 1200XL, how about posting the serial? Instead of "Where's George?" we can have "Where's Twelvie?"

Taiwan made, FCC BPA72R1200
72 R DA 02702 163
72 R DA 07009 183
72 R DA 25155 253

USA made, FCC BPA83S1200
83S DA 028453 213

Yes.. I was very surprised to note that there was USA made 1200XL

Made In U.S.A.
83S DA 77266 193

Have another in storage that I'll post origin and s/n for later.

From storage:
