HSC Season 4 Week 57: Seaquest

Your divers have retrieved the buried treasure, and now you must come to their rescue. The object of Seaquest is to retrieve as many treasure-divers as you can, while dodging and blasting enemy subs and killer sharks. All before your oxygen runs out!

Scoring Points in Seaquest

  • When the game begins, every killer shark and enemy sub is worth 20 points. Every time you surface with six divers, the value of enemy subs and killer sharks increases by 10, up to a maximum of 90 points each. Rescued divers start at 50 points each. Then, their point value increases by 50, every time you surface, up to a maximum of 1000 points each. Also, you'll be further rewarded with bonus points for all the oxygen you have remaining the moment you surface. The more oxygen you have left, the more bonus points you're given.

Hints and Tips

As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy and a scanned copy available online. Here are the hints it provides:

 

As soon as you've picked up your sixth diver, start watching out for the Patrol Sub. It's important to surface in the right spot, especially since the Patrol Sub sails faster as the game progresses.

 

And, every time you surface, you increase the game's level of difficulty. So, keep your surfacing to a minimum, with one exception: when you've got five divers aboard, and your oxygen's running low--surface to refill your oxygen supply. You'll lose one diver, but you can easily pick up two or more to resurface and gain a lot of extra bonus points.

 

"Practice 'Silent Running'. It's the best technique I know of to really learn underwater navigation.

- You can fit between rows of enemies, it's not always easy but it can be done

- You can fit between the top row of enemies and the surface without actually surfacing for air

- Always try to shoot out a row of subs, a diver will appear almost every time afterward in that row

- Wait for divers to come out a bit before shooting the enemy chasing them or else they'll turn around and disappear before you can grab them

Silent running does work, but in order to be successful, some sharks and subs must be destroyed making it easier to pick up the divers. Set yourself up so that there is only one enemy in each of the four rows. If there is two enemys in each row, get rid of one in each leaving one. if there are three get rid of two in each leaving one. It takes some practice but works for me and as I stated earlier, getting use to the higher speeds of the subs and sharks is a must! Practice, Practice, Practice.

53,210 in my first game, just messing around

 

I like that Activision was able to take such simple concepts and using cool colors, gfx and settings turn them into cool games

 

I mean if this game was set in space instead of the ocean, it wouldn't be nearly as memorable

Some obvious hints:

My new best is: 152,010.

 

Very fun game. Always amazes me how fun a simple game like this can be. Genius of the designers and programmers back then.

Once the sharks and subs go faster than my sub then it gets really hard really fast for me. Not very good at the "silent running" thing.

Ha! That's what happens to me. I'll be totally kicking ass then all of a sudden I can't get a diver to save my life (or theirs!) and 5 or 6 subs are gone.

 

BTW you know you're getting old when a couple of rounds of Atari makes your shoulder hurt!

I'll try but I dont think I can top the current high.

 

IIRC the actual Sub Club score was 40,000. That's the patch I sent in for & they sent back Laser Blast's "1,000,000" patch...

 

 

But I didnt keep it...:( :( :(

I know what you mean by the sore shoulder. I think the HSC has really helped build my Atari muscles up. These include the left thumb and right arm (between the deltoid and bicep). I don't think these muscles are used for anything else in life, but oh well.

 

Also, I may have to try left handed so I don't get lopsided.

Look in yr rear view mirror.....that's me! :)

 

MindMaster how the heck do you clear one or two enemies when they're coming at you a million miles an hour, I just try to shoot stuff and get out of the way of anything that lives.
