Important Note: This week's competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

Greetings. As you well know, sophisticated enemy Robot Tanks are quickly advancing cross country, firing at will and stopping at nothing. You must command your own Robot Tanks to stop their charge of chaos. Avoid being hit by enemy fire, or your Robot Tanks may be destroyed. The rebels are currently headed towards downtown Santa Clara. Only you can stop them. Good luck!

Scoring Points in Robot Tank

  • Shoot a tank, get a point.

Hints and Tips

As always, you really should read the manual. If you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a scanned copy and a typed copy available online for your viewing pleasure! Here are the tips the manual provides:

- Enemy Robot Tanks continually sneak up on you. You'll frequently end up losing visibility for one reason or another. So, practice aiming at enemy tanks using only the radar scan. If you can master this, you will have better battling success at night or in fog.

- When there's no visibility, I suggest constantly maneuvering your Robot Tank to keep the enemy behind you, so that the vulnerable front of your tank is safe. Then, you can wait until conditions improve.

- If your tank is damaged, and it's night, keep track of the time using the military clock. If it's close to 0500 hours, then you may decide to wait for the weather alert. Conditions may improve from the previous day, and your next offensive may prove more successful.

- Remember that you can neutralize enemy fire by shooting into it. But, it's a risky tactic. Your miss could backfire and become a hit for your attacker.

Use the radar screen to target enemy tanks as stated in the intruction manual. Timing is essential in getting off fast and accurate shots by moving up and keeping the enemy tanks blip in the top center of the radar screen after each kill. Rotate the tank clockwise or counter clockwise non-stop in snow, fog or at night then firing before the enemy comes into view.
Guide those shots, people! And don't run and hide every time a tank shoots at you. Remember: if you destroy the tank, their shot is also destroyed. It's often easier (at least early on) to hit enemy tanks when they're coming straight for you, guns a-blazin'.
One thing I've noticed -- if your cannons become damaged, only every third press of the fire button will actually fire a shot. However, if you manage to hit something, the next press will work also. So, if you can manage to hit a tank or its missile every time you fire once your cannons are damaged, it'll be as though you've had no damage done to them at all.
Stick and move like a boxer. Use the radar to fire off a shot before you can actually see the enemy tank and try to guide the shot as you sweep across the screen. Do a complete circle and try it again until you get them

Be aggressive. As previously mentioned, you can shoot the enemy missiles or get the tank before the missile gets you

There's no shame in running. Limit your fighting in the rain (you're slower) or in any conditions you're not comfortable in. Use the radar to get the enemy behind you and move forward until conditions improve.

* Back-up! If you back straight up with the enemy out in front of you, he cannot shoot you - he'll be too far out of range, and will spend his time trying to catch back up to you. This is a great way to ride out snow storms, or nighttime (if you don't have the hang of using the radar for aiming). It also works if your treads are damaged. Back-up for awhile, then move forward and shoot, and back-up again. You can usually keep away from the other tank, and might be able to take a few of them out.

* As others have said - use the radar! You can hit as many tanks at night or in fog as you can in the day. Just fire a shot, and move the joystick back and forth rapidly to keep the enemy tank dot straight above the center of the radar. Especially in the early levels, this works great!

* If the enemy shoots at you, remember: out of sight, out of mind. As soon as his shot is off screen, it's harmless. Backing up will give you more time to react, and shoot his shots if necessary.

* In the snow, or if your radar and video are knocked out, move forward while turning constantly (joystick held at 45° either left or right), and keep firing. Odds are they won't hit you, and once in awhile you'll hit one of them. It may keep you alive long enough to earn an extra tank.

* Rain gives you an advantage, since it bogs both tanks down a little bit, and makes aiming more precise. Snow is just the opposite. It's almost better to just avoid the other tank until the snow clears.

Absolutely wonderful game from the wizard himself, David Crane. I actually have a story behind this one...

One day, when I was in elementary school, I was walking to school, and happened upon the instruction manual to this game. It was in great shape. I kept that manual and dreamed about getting the game for years. About 5 or so years ago, I happened upon it for a dollar (!), and picked it up. I kept that instruction booklet, too, so now I have the game and the manual!
