Speaking of getting the 8-bit connected...

I've decided I'm going to officially put my 130XE "online," I use quotes because I may just end up using it the old fashioned way with BBS numbers. This brings me to my point: A few months back there was news, I believe here, that a site designed for 8-bits, running on an 8-bit, was opened. I don't remember if this is a site one can go to through the internet or if it was a BBS number to call. In either case, I'd like someone to please direct me to this once again, and, if any old Atari BBS's are still up and running, the numbers to those too please...or any other 8-bit friendly web sites. My XE has never been anything but a solitary computer, at least until I connected it to my PC, so this will be a first for both of us. If anyone can suggest a good 8-bit program to do this, or a "web browser" if one exists, please do so. I'm currently planning on seeing what the program 'Ice-T' can do, as it came with my A.P.E. set up and I assume it will work with 'remote control' and using my PC's modem. 8)

OK, here's what I've discovered so far. I have tried both the Bobterm and Ice-T terminal programs which emulate vt100 terminals. Actually, Ice-T emulates others as well. These work with Telnet. I loaded them via my A.P.E cable and software and attempted to open the default site of APE.penguinpower.com (although online at the web site, and when i tried with the PC's terminal program, it refered to Thefutureis.penguinpower.com) and the atari program would get the PC connected with the modem, it dialed my ISP, etc., but then the Atari kept losing the host even though APE on the PC said it was connected. A visit to the APE homepage revealed that the Telnet site is indeed offline temporarily, so that was probably the problem.

The manual says that APE modem will work like a normal 850 interface attached to a modem if you use the standard Atari modem programs (BBS stuff).

So now i need to find out the telnet address for "Closer to home" and try that out.

Bobterm should be used with 800 and 800xl's or any other 8-bit with 64k or less. Ice-T has a version for 64k atari's, but the one I'm using is for the 130XE and uses 128k. it's in eighty columns verses 40 column bobterm.

I'm not sure about its official status but the Closer to Home webpage has been down for a few months for me. Using google's cache you can get the telnet address although I don't think that's up either:

telnet://cth.dtdns.net/

A mirror of the CTH ftp archive is up at ftp://ftp.spudster.org/pub/Atari/CTH/ which is useful to pull down several programs at once.
