keilbaca
Ug, I am so impatient. The controls are bad, and I like to do other things than stand worthless and wait for a rope to launch.

Deteacher
Time to raise the bar: 92,760. I made it to stage 17. Here's a tip: You can kill the enemies with your flashlight when you're charged up. It doesn't stun them. It's as if the flashlight is an extension of you. I'm not sure if the arcade version is like that or not (I'll have to try it out and report back) but I was able to kill MANY more enemies by using my flashlight. EDIT: Just tried it on the arcade version. The flashlight trick mentioned above does not work...it only stuns them when you're charged up. aftermac
90,200 Ahhhhhh! I was gonna wait a while to post this one, but now what's the point... I made it to level 18.
Captain Beard
Nice scores, fellas! Yikes! I have some catchin' up to do... The controls are bad... It's not the controls that are killing me -- I think I've got'em down now -- it's the piss-poor collision detection! Tip: When you're at the top of the rope, just before you can push up to climb onto the level above, enemies can't touch you. At least in this example, the crappy collision detection is your friend. toymailman
Yikes!! Those are some amazing scores guys. I assume you were recording? Looks like someone is going to break 100k with this one. I'm getting a little better too, but not good enough yet. 59,

aftermac
100,780 WOOOO!!! Let's put that bar up another notch. The last 30,000+ was on my last life! I believe I made it to level 20. Thanks for the compliments toy and Captain! No, I wasn't recording... I'm using Stella. If I get ambitious I could hook the video out from my iBook to the TV tuner on my G4 and record it like that... The worst part about this game is the lack of responsiveness. Especially, when you're climbing the rope. You have to stop moving for at least a second before you can use the flash light or to avoid falling when an enemy is shaking the rope. I can deal with piss-poor collision detection, but lack of responsiveness drives me nuts! Edited February 10, 2008 by aftermac

This should help A LOT! That is how I lose all my lives. The rope is soooo long and takes awhile to climb that a monster always seems to walk along and shake me off. Thanks! This should help A LOT! That is how I lose all my lives. The rope is soooo long and takes awhile to climb that a monster always seems to walk along and shake me off. Thanks! No problem! Keep in mind that the dinosaurs (green ones) can still break/chew through your rope, but the cavemen can't... so, if you have the option it's better to plant your rope stake on a platform with a caveman. But, like I said the responsiveness isn't that great (like a second delay), so if an enemy is approaching your stake stop moving. You can fall safely to the ground until you reach about the half-way point of the rope... assuming there is ground underneath you, that is. Another good trick, mentioned by Captain Beard (so, he gets credit for the tip), is when you reach the top of the rope there is a sweet spot. Your character will turn his back to you as he is climbing onto the platform. Enemies can walk above and below you and no one can touch you... unless they climb up or down where you are hanging. Good luck!

Captain Beard
You have to stop moving for at least a second before you can use the flash light... I thought this too originally, but it's not so. It's actually laid out in the manual: Play/Action Button: Press the Play/Action Button while the Control Stick is in the up position to make your explorer shoot a rope. Your explorer cannot shoot another rope while still on a rope. Press the Play/Action Button when the Control Stick is in any other position to make your explorer shine his flashlight, whether he is on or off a rope. In other words, if when climbing the rope, you are still pushing up (necessary to launch the rope in the first place) then your flashlight will not shine. But you do not need to push directly up to scale the rope - you can push in the horizontal direction you wish to move and you'll still shimmy along. If you do that, your flashlight will still work. Now go break 200,000, aftermac

I guess I do keep pushing up when I'm climbing the rope. As for 200,000... I'd be lucky to get that in consecutive games!

Captain Beard
75,170 - FINALLY beat my previous score after many, many attempts this weekend. I'm so gunning for that 100,000 mark now! Tip: Can't believe I hadn't noticed before, but when you zap a baddie with your flashlight, when the effect wears off he will be traveling in the opposite direction he was before you stunned him. This has saved my life countless times when I've gotten backed into a corner.
aftermac
138,740 I put in my bid for 200,000, but didn't quite make it. I did get to level 30... losing two lives on level 24 really hurt. My new biggest complaint about this game is that it only gives you an extra life at 20,000 points. For as easy as they are to lose, the game is pretty stingy about giving them back. Tip: Can't believe I hadn't noticed before, but when you zap a baddie with your flashlight, when the effect wears off he will be traveling in the opposite direction he was before you stunned him. This has saved my life countless times when I've gotten backed into a corner. That's not 100% true, at least in my experience. Most of the time they will turn the other way, but not always. However, if you're backed into a corner you really don't have any other choice, do you? Edited February 12, 2008 by aftermac

Ze_ro
Well, that's the end of this weeks edition of the High Score Club! Congratulations to everyone on their scores, and I hope you enjoyed Roc 'n Rope! I actually have a theory about Coleco's 2600 games... the going rumor of course is that Coleco intentionally made their games inferior so that the ColecoVision would look better in comparison. I think this may be true, but I think at some point Coleco realized that they were actually making some pretty decent money off their "poisoned" games and decided that it would be more profitable in the long run to actually make quality 2600 games rather than to ruin the systems reputation. After all, this is a company that managed to reverse-engineer the 2600 and make both the Gemini and the 2600 adapter for the ColecoVision (Both of which were very compatible from what I've read)... the guys Coleco had working for them probably knew at least as much about the system as any other company out there (maybe second only to Atari themselves!). In my opinion, this skill really shows in games like Roc 'n Rope. It's too bad that by this point, the industries reputation was ruined (some of which was possibly Coleco's fault... their poor Donkey Kong port was just as much to blame as E.T. and Pacman) and it was too late to recover. --Zero
