Gunstar
Actually, that may not be "technically" true, but here's what I'm talking about... Everybody seems to act as though "online gaming" or "local area networks" are something that is new, but in some ways, it's been around for over 20 years. Many probably remember some ill-fated online networks for consoles like The Genesis, Sarturn, and even earlier consoles. The fact is, that via modem, this technology has been around for a long time. I never tried it on my 8-bit, because I never got around to buying a modem and hooking up with compuserve and BBS's (for younger generation this is old-fashioned "internet"). But I do remember seeing several games for the 8-bit on shelves in the local computer store back in the day, that were meant for play with two or more people via modem. there were also gaming services like 'Games People Play' network as well as Compuserve "areas" that had online gaming. I want to know if anyone knows what the names of this software is, whether a commercial/shareware/PD release or through one of the gaming services and where they can be downloaded. I also want to know if anyone has tried to do this recently with emulators or standard Atari's using APE and the PC's modem or emulator on the PC and an 8-bit using APE, or even just two PC's emulating an 8-bit and playing these modem games. Null modems maybe?

krisjohn
Don't forget BBS gaming and play-by-email. I don't recall any dates, but there's some seriously early stuff there. Or what about the old mainframe multiplayer games. There was a maze shooter called something like "hunt" that I used to play on an old PDP-something. 11? Something like that. Don't know if the PDP-11 was "8-bit" though -- more likely something like 24-bit.
Wrathchild
Many NES/SNES emulators have net based join-up features, couldn't the same thing be built into the Atari800 emulator?

That's the one I remember. I'd like to try that somehow. I recently got the 800/5200 emulator on my DC too, and I think it would be cool to get this game and use my XE and my DC800 emulator. Or at least try.
