Doctor: A new demo by Trilobit for the Atari 2600

Finally.

A YouTube video:

I tried capturing it with CamStudio 2.5 to see if I could get a clearer picture. If you like this, I can send you the video so you can upload it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuFPK0A0hYg&fmt=18

Thanks!

Apparently you used a frame merger for the whole demo. It causes some blurriness in those effects that don't use flickering. Also, music gets a bit out of sync towards the end.

Anyhow, plasma and that pixel effect look a lot better in your version. In my opinion we could keep both versions online.

I must have turned on Use Phosphor in Stella and forgotten about it. When you get a chance, check this out and see if it's any better:

If you like this, I'll delete the other one.

In the second version scrolltexts look a bit funny... As if there were pixels missing. The wobbly hires-picture doesn't look normal either. Also the music might be even more out of sync than in the first version.

As a whole I think the first one was better.

Btw. We ordered a s-video kit today, which means that we'll hopefully get authentic video captures in the near future.

That will be nice.

Here's my third and last try:

I'll keep whatever version you think is the best, at least until you upload your own S-Video version of it which should be the best version of all.

What happened with this? Did you ever make an even better YouTube video using S-Video? If you did, please let me know and I'll delete this one:

If you don't mind, is it okay if I mirror this demo onto DailyMotion?

The website lacks this particular demo, and I am interested in putting it on there. This is my profile for the website if you are curious as to where it is being put on.

I am sure you won't mind, but it never hurts to be careful, I will fully credit you and link to the publications (And the original YouTube upload).

Incidentally, the demo blew my mind... I actually thought it was a VIC-20 demo at first. Then I read the YouTube uploads comments. :D

And yes, I am aware this post is really out of the blue... I admit it, I don't really plan to be that active, I was not really much of an Atari guy (Hell, my childhood was mostly Sega stuff... I'm only 17), however, this does not mean I lack the appreciation for the machines. ;)

Now if TASVideos would actually bother getting an Atari (Any of the machines) emulator with rerecording implemented, "Not enough games are worth it" isn't an excuse.

Edit: If you shall wish to see the demo on DailyMotion now, please tell me if I have mislabeled anything.

Personally, I am surprised more people don't upload the demos themselves, it'd make sense. Granted, DailyMotion isn't that popular, but it kicks YouTube's ass in awesomeness.

Edit 2: Yes, I did make this post without visiting any topics outside of this one, literally... so uh, I know none of the culture in this forum. If I have offended anyone, I apologize profusely. Just as a disclaimer, I am not a Nintendo fanboy despite the name, I just had an interesting childhood... if anything, I'd be more of a Sega fanboy. :P

The s-video kit we ordered didn't work as well as we expected so our friend ended up designing and building his own video output mod. However, it seems that the rotating cube effect doesn't work properly on real hardware thanks to badly timed HMOVE.

I've been intending to fix it but i've rather spent my time on new projects.

Thank you.

I shall once again disappear once again, if ever! If a demo is made by a new author, I shall return once again! For the legend of Flygon, the obsessive creature shall hold true!

I shall now take wing in an over dramatized fashion. Shall we meet again.

Hey guys! Sorry for the big bump on this.

But I was testing my emulator with some of these demos, and this one in particular (Doctor) works but it seems to start at the middle of the sequence (right up the face before the cubes). The cubes work perfectly though.

Can anyone tell me what type of bankswitching it uses?

I think that is the problem.

This is the emulator I am trying to run it: http://javatari.org

Peccin

It appears to be plain F8.

It's best practice for a bankswitched program to not assume which bank its going to start up in, but unfortunately a lot of programs don't do this... I'd guess that other emulators just pick a default bank to start in that works with these programs.

You're right. I just tried to set a different bank at startup and it worked like "expected".

So, there is really no solution to this problem, by the emulator. IMO there is no "right" bank to start. Which one the emulator chooses can be the right one or not.

Its really be the program that should ensure correct and deterministic behavior.

Hi, does anyone still have a copy of Doctor and Tricade by Trilobit?

http://oldskool.wamma.fi/is down and Pouet doesn't seem to have other mirrors for those.

:(

EDIT:

Odd, the attachment from Impaler_26's didn't work for me earlier, but now it does... So, it's only Tricade left to hunt down.

EDIT2:

This one crashes for me on Harmony, guess it's the "wrong" version in the end.
