Old docs are invaluable, I found the old petereson docs. The docs from the wedge from Ed Bachman led to the switch that I added to that. Metalguy's suggestion to add the triple throw was a good idea for covering the bases. As for the SpartaX switch, I found the docs on that but it was to piggyback espress and sparta in the same cart for those who could not find both.

 

The PBI extenders looks pretty nice! Now for putting them thru their paces!

Yeah as far as using sparta & express on the same cart, you can do that with any 2 roms that share the same banking scheme by just going to the next larger sized EPROM (to which you would burn both images) and just toggling the state of the highest adress line..

 

What I did over in the SDX 4.42 thread was to adapt the 128k banking upgrade from the SDXint logic to the original Sparta Logic, and then add a switch that toggles the highest adress line (as described above) so that you can switch back & forth between original ICD spartados, and the new ver 4.42 spartados.. In case your wondering, the ICD sparta (only 64k) image is doubled in the second half of the eprom, so that the state of the SECOND highest adress line doesnt matter when the state of the highest adress line is switched into "ICD ver 4.22" mode..

Got mine (bare board) today and it looks great :cool: ... except the postal service broke it. It's cracked along the row of holes for the 2nd cart connector near the pbi terminals. Not your fault, obviously. Should I try to bend it back or will that just crack it further?

 

Holy crap dude.. That was packed in a padded envelope.. I would contact your local postmaster and raise HOLY HELL... make them pay for it.

those boards are not fragile by any means.. They mustve tried real hard to break it like that..

 

as far as fixing it, I would put a piece of perfboard behind it, drill some small holes (where theres no traces) through both boards, and put some small nuts & bolts through it.. That should make it strong again.. Then, test everything with an ohm meter and solder jumper wires to repair any broken traces..

 

Im sorry about that.. This is why I dread using the us postal service.. worthless freakin union asses..

I had absolutely no problems with the installation instructions, just followed the diagram and soldered each wire on the board.

 

For people that just purchased a circuit board and want to use both cartridge slots I would recommend installing a 90 degree DIP header like Stephen did. When you plug a cartridge into the port closest to the computer it overlaps the DIP header slightly as you can see in the attached pictures.

I had absolutely no problems with the installation instructions, just followed the diagram and soldered each wire on the board.

 

For people that just purchased a circuit board and want to use both cartridge slots I would recommend installing a 90 degree DIP header like Stephen did. When you plug a cartridge into the port closest to the computer it overlaps the DIP header slightly as you can see in the attached pictures.

Yeah. None of my carts have cases on them, so...

 

A better solution than the right angle header is simply to install the header on the botom side of the board.. You can easily solder it in either way.. You just have to re-order the wires accordingly.. From right to left, you end up with 2-1-4-3-6-5-8-7-10-9 instead of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10....

Use the same installation instructions, but treat the wire numbers in the ribbon as I just stated..

 

Also, if you plan to use this with cased carts, you can solder steel pins into the holes on either side of the cart connector to act as "openers" for the ATARI brand carts..

 

The thin finishing nails that you use to hang pictures work well..

Did the PCB maker screw up? The before picture you made was correct but what they produced was off.

Why did they tin the short srip near the cart end and then green protective coat the cartridge end?

It looks like they ground off the green coating and took off some of the metal on the pads.

Yeah I wont be using that manufacturer again.. They had some problems with the soldermask layer.. It doesnt cause a functional problem, and when the board is installed, you'll never see it.. I am not gonna press the issue with the manufacturer, because it's not worth it.. I just wont use them in the future..

 

Yeah.. The solder mask had to be polished off the cart contacts.. That stuff is impervious to any chemical that wont also melt the board, so the only option is abrasive removal..

Great :) board. Installation very easy with the instructions given. One suggestion is to do all pin connections above the ribbon cable first and then do the below ribbon cable connections. I left #9 connection for last and then did the trace cut. Stacked SDX cart and Rtime8 cart works good, but SDX cart on top wouldn't boot. All others that I tried worked in either slot.

 

But I do have several carts that I will probaly un-case just for this board. :cool:

 

:thumbsup: :lust: Now I want an MIO or someone to repair the 256 Mio that is not working. (Fried Diodes and Boggled attemp at repair--I got from Ebay)

Got the board a week or two ago and a friend and I installed it tonight. My 1200 has the AtariMax 32-1 OS upgrade, 256k memory expansion, the video mod, and now the PBI mod :) I've also got a MyIDE cart with SpartaDOS X 4.39 installed on it (using the instructions found here somewhere). Also tested this with SIO2OSX and an SIO2USB.

Installation went smoothly, and here we are powering it up for the 1st time!

Everything works as expected! A couple of observations:

 

  • As mentioned before, the header on the PBI board interferes with the first cart slot. You cant actually get an AtariMax style cart in there.
  • The 1200XL will not operate (at all) with the PBI board removed.
  • If an MIO is connected, it must be turned on for the 1200 to boot.
  • The AtariMax MyIDE cart works fine! I am able to boot SpartaDOS X from it, and access the IDE partitions, along with the MIO.
  • Performing this upgrade seems to clear up the video "sparkle" problem I was having.
  • We need a case for the PBI board, or at least some standoffs so it has some support.
  • I'd LOVE to see some sort of right angle PBI cable, or put the PBI header on the "back" of the board so the MIO sits where it should!

But where is your MIO hard drive? I see the 65,242 sectors, but no HD visible. What model HD and firmware are you using?

 

Perhaps it's sitting under the MIO -- but that looks like an Indus case.

Those are MyIDE partitions. I was trying to show the MyIDE (65k sector partition) and the MIO (small ramdisk) working together. I dont have a HD for the MIO; im waiting on someone to figure out how to get a SCSI to IDE adapter working with one of them :)
