Soccer Kid, Worms for Jaguar - impressions?

hey there guys, was wondering if anyone here bought Soccer Kid for Jaguar, I loved it on Amiga(1200, CD-32), and was wondering how Jaguar version fared,

I got it for Playstation and Gameboy Advance(not easy to obtain it for these platforms) but found it quite bland compared to CD-32 version, I'd say it was a poor conversion on both systems.

never had a chance to play worms for it too, so impressions would be appreciated,

Well I played the SNES version (Adventures of Kid Kleets). I dunno, the soccer ball seemed really hindering and cumbersome to me. The game seemed to move so slowly because you have to figure out what to do with your ball and at the same time run, jump and look out of bad guys! From what I've seen, the Jag version looks like a straight 16-bit port. I guess it's possible they added more colors. Not really sure. Personally I think the game isn't worth anything over $50 new..

 

Never played Worms, seems way too expensive for the Jag version though. I guess it is rare though, is why. Only thing is, many other systems have the same game if I'm not mistaken.

Worms is for me one of the Top 10 ever created video games.

So i've purchased the Jag version (70€ **glups**) cause it's more easy to play with friends than on the PC.

 

It's a "classic" conversion, nothing more than other versions, but some things less: no replay and the team names cannot be saved when you turn off the jag.

 

I've just try Worms 4 Mayhem yesterday on my PC, it's horrible... No Fun my babe, no fun!

Played my first outing of Soccer Kid last night. On the up side, the graphics are nice, the music upbeat, and the control/collision and jump detection of the character seems to be excellent. My main gripe (and this is a potential fun/game ruiner) is why the hell didn't they tether the soccer ball to the character!! It slows you down so much and you spend half the level managing the ball and trying not to kick it off screen or down a hole. You can juggle the ball in place but not jump or move with it, and it's your only attack. Anyone else on here find this eternally frustrating? I mean I wan't to try every Jag game out and then thin my collection down to "keepers" so no regrets...but man, what a frustrating game because of the loose ball element.

I really enjoyed my first foray with Worms last night...I can already tell it's going to get a lot of play time, and multiplayer use, on my jag.

You do realize you can "summon" a new soccer ball at any time, right? :) I think you hold the A button down to do so. Otherwise, I would totally agree, it would be highly frustrating.

 

That is very helpful. Maybe I should start reading the manual before griping about gameplay problems lol. How is this kid able to magically summon soccer balls? No wonder everyone is trying to kill him, he's a wizard!!

 

 

WORMS on the other hand, I did read the manual, and eventually figure most everything out. What's up with the controls with Question marks next to them, like "center on your worm"? Were those controls ever published anywhere? I wonder why they weren't originally included by Telegames.

I couldn't quite get how Worms worked. Need to devote some time and give it another try sometime.

 

Soccer Kid is a lot of fun. Once you learn you can summon the ball there are ways you can jump up real high jumping from the ball, many kick combinations, etc. All and all I'm pleased with the platformers on the Jaguar.

Yeah and apparently Orion is working on a new one so I'm pretty stoked about that!! I thoroughly enjoy platformers.

 

I have to say, I like the more linear, easier to play ones like Mario Brothers. I'm still finding Bubsy a little confusing. My plan is to watch your videos and just pause it and go step by step until I've beaten the level. Then do it over and over until I have it memorized and can breeze through it. Definitely not a "pick up and play" game, but more of a memorization one. Still fun though, definitely going to work on mastering it!

Isn't part of the screen chopped off at the bottom on the Jaguar version or am I confusing this with something else?

 

Need to be able to see what weapon you're selecting for sure. From there, it's pretty much a fancy and cartoonish Artillery Duel type game. :)

This is interesting.

 

Because Telegames are seemingly UK based, does that mean that Worms on the Jag is a PAL/50Hz title?

 

If Worms were optimised to run at full screen on a 50Hz/PAL console, that would explain why the bottom of the screen is cut off when run in the US on a 60Hz/NTSC console (happens when optimised PAL Saturn titles are run on a 60Hz console).

 

Otherwise, I have no explanation as to why that could be the case. Also, never heard of that issue before concerning ANY Jaguar game, or Worms for that matter...

Slam Racer's map not filling the PAL screens..

 

and, of course, who can forget Gorf 'orf!

What CJ said AND Zool 2 runs way too fast on the Jag, so can assume it was optimized for 50hz PAL land?

Zool 2 runs just fine on the Jag.

Yep - just too fast. I've verified this by switching between tv standard modes on my Amiga. Play NTSC Zool in NTSC mode... runs at correct speed. Now try playing the PAL version in NTSC mode... plays too fast - just like what we see with the Jag version. While some might welcome the extra bump in speed, feels too unnatural for me. Most obvious when jumping up and down. Ant is too heavy or gravity is too high - take your pick. I'll take playing it at the correct speed on the Amiga any day of the week.
