HSC Season 6 Week 22: Flash Gordon

Many dedicated Spacemen have entered Spider City but none has ever been heard from again. It is up to you, Flash Gordon, to rescue any surviving Spacemen and to conquer this hideous city of tunnels. Spider City is conquered when all of its Hatching Pods are eliminated. It doesn't hurt to blast a few Generators or enemy Patrol Ships while you're there.

Scoring Points in Flash Gordon
  • Debris - 10 points
  • Patrol Ship - 25 points
  • Rescued Spaceman - 70 points
  • Disruptor Generator - 100 points
  • Spider Warrior - 100 points for the first one, 200 for second, 300 for third, etc.
  • Shooting a Spaceman - 1000 point penalty
  • You get an extra life each time a city is conquered. You also get bonus points, plus 10 points for each rescued Spaceman multiplied by the number of cities conquered (ie 10 points in the first city, 20 in the second, 30 in the third, etc).

 

Hints and Tips
  • The key is to try and maintain shields at all times. Once you have shields, go to another Hatching Pod right away. You can use the shielded Ship to quickly destroy the Spider Warriors.
  • When the Disrupters speed up at the higher levels, it is almost essential to shoot a Generator in order to escape.
  • Learn to use both displays. The City Map is your only clue to where you are and to where the Pods are.
The Manual
As always, you really should read the manual. AtariAge has a typed copy available online. Here are the hints it provides:

Plan your route. I find that if you pick a route through the maze and stick to it, you can usually hit hatching pod after hatching pod. Shields help but are not essential.

The spacemen are worth picking up. Go after every one of them, even if you have to sacrifice shields or go out of your way. I've never seen patrol ships appear when a spaceman is on the screen.

Entering the area of a hatching pod will usually eliminate any debris on the screen that's caused by a disrupter.

If you get caught in a disrupter, hang out until a generator appears, then kill it.

You can usually escape the disrupters by using the tunnels--plan this into your route through the maze. Keep this in mind when you are through with the last hatching pod. If your last pod is near a tunnel, go through the tunnel and wait for the debris to clear.

200,910 round 8, third try (the second only got me around 176,000).

post-8393-1233612487_thumb.pngOK, this is my entry for this week... 109880. From the 6th city on, the gameplay gets much harder in that the debris fields start moving so fast that they catch up with you easily and you're practically constantly surrounded by debris.

 

Actually, Flash Gordon was the first movie I ever saw in a cinema back in early 1982 at the age of 10... but I can't remember anything remotely being similar to this game being in the movie. Actually, your ship's movements are pretty unrealistic when compared to the surrounding's movements... the background graphics somehow seem to scroll, but your enemies still keep the same speed relative to you no matter which direction you're flying.
