What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2010 (Season 3)

Hmmm... not much activity there. I think I'll stop posting if I don't see anybody who has posted for a week except for myself.

Anyway... here are my times for this past week:

The classic games:

Steamroller (Colecovision): 176 minutes in 3 sessions

Monaco Grand Prix 2600 (unfinished): 1 minute (I don't know if it's actually called this way)

The non-classic games (non-eligible for the Top 10):

Trünkel Würstelstand (Online game): 16 minutes

Space Birdz (PC): 325 minutes in 4 sessions

I had 3 more sessions of Steamroller and again beat my 35.000 points mark.

Monaco Grand Prix is a WIP I picked up in the forum here. There isn't too much to see there yet.

Trünkel Würstelstand is an Austrian game where you work at a sausage stand and have to feed sausages to various celebrities who appear as a face caricature complete with voice imitation. It's fun for a while, but gets boring fast.

Space Birdz is a game I downloaded back in 2004... a 2D space shooter with 3D models. The first five stages are very much like Phoenix, but the enemies you shoot drop extras you can pick up for more bullets, multiple shots, speed up etc. After facing the mother ship called "Psychic Saucer", you enter a wormhole and have to dodge mines. At the end of the wormhole, there's a shop where you can buy various extras, after that you have to endure three Galaga-like stages, three stages of a "Rotten Egg Swoop" and two more stages which are similar to Alpha Centuri.

After that, the demo tells you that this is the end of the demo and there will be a full version with 50 stages. Problem is, that full version never emerged, and the Spacebirdz homepage has gone offline years ago. Anyway, after that message the game restarts a bit harder. Of course, you retain all the extras you gained the first time around, but you lose some of your extras each time you die. I consider this a very good game all in all.

I plan to keep posting, though I admit it's dispiriting that cvga hasn't updated the stats in months. I sent him a PM, but he hasn't read it, or been on AA since July. Not sure what's going on there; hope he's OK. Either way, I always appreciate your detailed and informative posts.

Here are my times for this past week (September 20th through 26th)...

This week I only played modern games, no classic ones, so all of the following are not eligible for the Top 10:

Global Player (Online game) 239 minutes in 3 sessions

Mazda Burning Gears (PC) 72 minutes in 2 sessions

Cursed Treasure (Online game) 55 minutes

Space birdz (Online game) 34 minutes

Gaddy's Castle Defense (Online game) 17 minutes

Cellular Defense (Online game) 14 minutes

The apprentice (Online game) 11 minutes

Freeway Fury (Online game) 9 minutes

Ant City (Online game) 6 minutes

Doodle Jump (Online game) 3 minutes

Car Chaos (Online game) 1 minute

The game I played the most (by far) was Global Player. This is a German game where you have to do logistics. Each level consists of a system of conveyor belts leading to up to 9 vehicles (airplanes, trucks and ships). Boxes of different color come in unloaded from a truck, and you have to guide them to their destination (a vehicle marked with the same color) by controlling the junctions that bind the belts together. Two or three belts are going away from each junction, and you can toggle an arrow between the possible directions by clicking on the arrow so that boxes entering the junction will leave it on the correct belt. The levels get more complex over time, and in later levels you have to deliver more than one box per vehicle, while after receiving a parcel, the destination color of the vehicle changes to another one. Each fully loaded vehicle will leave. You can make mistakes by misguiding boxes to a vehicle with a wrong color, or a vehicle which has already left, and you can win a level by filling up all vehicles during the alotted time. All this is shown in an isometric perspective similar to Zaxxon and Marble Madness.

I thought about how this could be implemented on classic systems. I think you can do a simplified (2D, not isometric) version of it on nearly all systems that support tiled or hi-res graphics and sprites. That is, the Odyssey^2 won't make it, but the Odyssey^3 should be able to do it (since you could display the box sprites by the built-in box character... and that system can display a lot of them!), as well as the Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 8-bit, Atari 7800 etc. It could get a bit hard on the Atari 8-bit with the number of sprites required, though.

The full isometric view probably only would make sense on systems supporting full multicolor, such as the Atari 7800, the Atari 8-bit, the Amstrad CPC and the C-64, because the graphics needs that amount of colors to be properly displayed. The Atari 2600 probably couldn't display the movements of the belts, so I doubt this game could be implemented on it.

Mazda Burning Gears is a free racing game by the Austrian company Greentube with a multiplayer option. Right now, there's only one track built-in which leads you through the center of Vienna and shows pretty detailed views of the buildings there. At least I could make out quite a few places I've already been to in reality, so the map used here is pretty much correct, but probably simplified concerning the level of detail.

Cursed Treasure is another Tower Defense game (as far as I can remember), as is Cellular Defense, only that in Cellular Defense, you shoot at cells instead of men.

I think I already told you about Space Birdz last week. I didn't play too much of it this week.

Gaddy's castle defense is a defense game which looks a bit like Rampart, but in an isometric perspective. You can buy walls and soldiers and upgrade each of them, then start an attack wave where your army will fight the oncoming enemy which tries to take over your castle. From that you earn money which you can spend on more or upgraded soldiers and walls.

The apprentice is another restaurant simulation, but the free version only has a few levels and was pretty quick to finish.

Freeway Fury is a car racing game similar to Spy Hunter where you can earn points by crashing into other cars. But, similar to Grand Theft Auto, eventually your car starts to burn, and at that time, you (the driver) have to climb out onto the roof and jump onto another nearby car which you then can take over and continue to play with.

In "Ant City" you control a magnifying glass and look at people, dogs and cars from bird's eye view. You can concentrate the sunlight with that glass and burn away the people, dogs and cars... but you don't get any points for that, so I didn't get what's the actual purpose in this game.

Doodle Jump is a web version of the Iphone game. I don't know how similar the two versions are, though, since I don't know the iPhone version.

I can't remember what Car Chaos is, but apparently I didn't like it because I only played it for one minute.

I've discovered the addiction that is Kaboom! - I tried it a few weeks ago on Xbox 360 game room, but the controls were not well, I've had some paddle controllers laying around so I sought a real cartridge, and made the purchase… I've been hooked since! it's a game that I say to myself, just one more time, I can do better! and so that one more time turns to 20 more times, and then over an hour passes by! wow! it's a fun and addicting game and I am able to see why folks play and enjoy it so much!

Thanks for the comments. Between you and Atarian7 I expect someone to achieve nirvana!

If you play Kaboom! long enough, keep the paddle steady, keep your eyes on the bombs, don't blink and never let the bomber smile, you will attain true enlightenment and discover the four noble truths: playing the game is suffering, we suffer because we want a better score, we suffer more because it seems unattainable, to eliminate suffering we must get a higher score, therefore, the path is to keep playing games and never stop. Play on grasshopper!

The game I played the most (by far) was Global Player.

Your description made me go check this one out and I've really been enjoying it. What's the highest level you've gotten to?

At the time you wrote that post, I got to Level 9, which looks like a big checkerboard pattern, but didn't make it. I've now completed all 10 levels of Global Player, as well as the sequel, Global Player Reloaded, which will appear in this weeks' times.

Kinder im Verkehr? How do you play that game? Is there an instruction manual somewhere?

I only have it via the O^2 multicart, and was bemused by its almost Videlectrix-like quality -- totally obtuse and bizarre. Apparently there is a way to get that kid across the road, but I wasn't able to find it! I remember reading someone's post at videopac.nl about it, so I've registered to try to find out...
