+Mitch
Hi Google has not returned the manual for the Atari 830 Modem... Anybody has scanned this manual already? I need a copy... Regards I have an extra Atari modem manual but I just checked and it is for the XM301 modem. Hopefully someone else can hook you up. Ransom
If no one else finds one, I can look tonight. I have an 830 from back when. I'm sure I must have the manual in one of my binders.
lbaeza
Hi Please do, it's been very difficult finding any information about the manual... Besides the user manual, is there a Field Service manual for this modem? Regards
Ransom
Actually, it appears that the 830 modem manual was part of the 850 Interface Module Operator's Manual, as Appendix 13 (pp 97 to 102). It has some basic descriptive text, the dimensions and operating environment requirements, a description of the controls and indicators on the unit, a description of what the pins on the connector do, how to install the modem, and how to do basic operations and basic troubleshooting. Is that what you need?
lbaeza
Hi Ransom Yes, actually I just have the 830 modem and the 850 interface and I have no idea how to test this hardware... Directions on how to hook it up, basic operation and the like will be fine. The modem has some switches and lights but I have no idea what's the purpose of them. BTW, my 830 has some dirt on its 'ears', I'm tempted to open the modem to clean it up completely, but I still can't figure out the right way to open the unit. What amazes me is the fact that there are no visible screws or something like that! Anybody has opened one of these modems? Regards PS: I've found just one screw under the modem label, but it refuses to get out of the unit...maybe this is not a screw but an adjustable potentiometer or something like that... Ransom
OK, here's the 830 portion of the 850's manual. (Makes sense it was a combined manual, since you could only buy the 830 with the 850; both are pictured on the cover, BTW). Good luck! 830 Modem.pdf Edited January 5, 2010 by Ransom
charliecron
There might also be some information in the Telelink I manual. I have a copy of that at home, at work now but will have a look when I get home.
lbaeza
Thanks Ransom for sharing that information, I appreciate that. Today I gave it a try on disassembling the 830 modem, and I succeded! This is how I did it. First, I popped the right tab out only using my fingers. Then I could see inside the modem, and I noticed the speaker cables were disconnected! Then I popped out the rubber 'ears' carefully, using only the hands. Then I saw the internal PCB and realised it had no holders, no screws, just the bare board attached to the left tab. Then I popped the left tab, and then the PCB came out of the chassis. And that's it! With this I can clean my modem, and when I put the 'ears' again I'll connect them properly. I hope this information help others to clean their modems Regards

+Nezgar
Everything I know about opening my Atari 830 I learned from this video: (And wow, there was a lot of these re-branded by other companies!!)

+Stephen
Just got ahold of an 830 Modem, great timing on this thread's necro-bump
manterola
Could you tell us the power supply specs? I hear people saying that even 18V AC will make it. I am still trying to get one (an unexpensive one from some other device...). I haven't had luck in the local thrift stores....
+Stephen
The supply that came with mine, is a Novation AC Adapter, Model 901017. The front of it has a nice sticker with the Atari logo, and says "Use with 830 Modem Only". Ratings are, Input: 115VAC 60Hz, 15w. Output: 20VAC, 400mA. +Nezgar
The "Manual" for the 830 was basically an addendum to the 850 manual. Appendix 13 starts around page 99 of this PDF: https://archive.org/details/atari-850-operator Edit: and I now see that this has already been covered previously in this old thread haha
