What Lies Beneath?!

I recently acquired a ColecoVision lot (a GOOD one, too) via Craigslist (CLICK HERE for a video showing the entire lot).

Today, I was cleaning up the equipment and I noticed that the label on the underside of the main unit is covering another label.

Anyone have any ideas about what that other label might be?

My unit (which is in INCREDIBLE condition, btw) also has the "CONSUMER PLEASE NOTE!" sticker on the top.

Were those on all the units from the outset?

Not sure why there is 2 labels on the bottom, maybe a serial number re-numbering, or something. The label on the top is common, been on pretty well every one I've seen but it is often soiled and or torn but it comes off easy and the glue residue comes off to with little effort. But yours is clean and new-ish looking. Good condition CV console compared to the grimey Atari adaptor.

Craigslist has been hit and miss for me, I used to travel a lot and would place an ad a week in advance of me arriving in a new city, and try to drum up some goodies for my arrival. A lot of people wasted a lot of my time so I gave up on that. Once in a while a good score though...

First of all, I have now PHYSICALLY cleaned all of the items (including ALL of the cartridges). I opened Expansion Module #1 and the Roller Controller and cleaned those the most (blew out a lot of dust, washed all plastic bits and pieces, etc.) At this point, the main unit has been tested and it is INCREDIBLE. Gorgeous, bright, clean output. Switches are solid. Just a perfect unit. Expansion Module #1, however, is not working at the moment. I will be checking that more in the coming days (probably bust out a meter).

I will be cleaning all of the cartridge contacts starting tomorrow, though. That will take some time, but the results will be so worth it.

As for Craigslist, I have had nothing but great success over the past couple years... This huge haul as well as a TI-99/4A with accessories (for FREE), an Atari 1200XL (in incredible condition), an 800XL and a TRS-80 CoCo 2 (upgraded to 64K) via a TRADE (the seller was asking for cash, but I offered another item from my collection and he accepted).

Is it possible that your relabeled console was originally labeled for sale as a CBS branded model? If so, then maybe that is a CBS label underneath. Just a guess.

Use a heat gun to carefully remove the top label. If done right, there will be no damage and you can reapply it with Elmer's glue at a later time if so desired.

It might be a rebranded Canadian ColecoVision. I have two CV's with bottom labels that have white, rounded edges like the bottom label on yours does. Try peeling it off (or if you don't want to do that, try shining a really bright light on it and see if you can see through the top label). If it IS a Canadian label, it'll be bilingual, and show Coleco's address in Quebec.

Or maybe they just changed label styles and some point, and your system happened to still be in the factory at the time.
