Video Toaster Memories

Recommended Posts

The Video Toaster produced cool effects with broadcast quality results. If you had an extra 4,000 dollars lying around, it was yours. Better than hundreds of thousands of dollars, but for many of us, 4,000 was as attainable as a million. It was cheaper and amazing, but it wasn't for people riding the edge of the poverty line.

You probably don't get broadcast quality results with Windows Movie Maker, but you can do many of the same type of effects with it for free and the results are good enough for YouTube. There are also affordable programs under 100 dollars such as Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 that can do more than Windows Movie Maker. A lot of things might suck today, but at least good quality video editing has become affordable enough for the rest of us.

Check out these promo videos. I still have them in a box somewhere. I hope mine are still in good shape:

Wil Wheaton (Toaster Punk), Penn Jillette, and Tony Hawk loved the Video Toaster:

As usual, the Computer Chronicles can make the most exciting thing in the world seem boring:

I got into the Toaster (Flyer) really late in the game (to edit Stella at 20) so I missed out on its heyday. Great system that by the time I got into it was blighted by crufty software on an operating system that really suffered from no memory protection. It never ever went as far as it could have, because of the death of Commodore and Newtek pursuing the Lightwave cash-cow.
