Roller Controller Problems with Numeric Keypad

If I attach a CV hand controller to my Roller Controller, the unit will send keypresses constantly to the console if it's in joystick mode. So the "select difficulty" screen just whizzes by. Without a hand controller attached, the "select difficulty" screen stays onscreen. In trackball mode, it doesn't respond to keypad presses at all. So I have no way of selecting difficulty for trackball games like Slither and Victory (other than putting it in joystick mode briefly, and letting the ghost keypresses go through and select whatever game variation it selects).

 

It doesn't matter which hand controller I have attached, by the way, and there's no problem when the hand controllers are attached directly to the CV.

 

Is this a common Roller Controller problem? Or am I doing something wrong? (I made sure the connections were solid; and in any case the roller controller works great.)

 

Is there a known solution?
