darthkur
Requires a VIC 20 with 8k memory expansion and a joystick. Download the program binary here or its source archive. Awesome. I always envisioned the robots in Berzerk as Cylons. What will I have to do to be able to play this on actual hardware?
Albert
That looks great! Would love to see a video of the gameplay. ..Al
+SpiceWare
Nicely done! I posted a video of it on YouTube. The first bit you see is the Mega-Cart menu, which is where I make the VIC 20 have extra RAM for the game. The video is still processing at the moment, the image quality should improve once it's done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUol3yWLvRo
Cebus Capucinis
Wow! That is so awesome! The gameplay is really smooth and looks like tons of fun! What a great conversion!
NightSprinter
Damn, man! Now I'm seriously wanting a Vic20. Something out of curiosity, given what many of us have heard from demos like "Robotic Liberation" is it possible to create a "speech" routine to fake the sound of the voice samples from the arcade game? The game already has the rest of the sound and graphics down to the letter.
Robert Hurst
Nice video!! Thanks for posting it. I like the Add Reply button here sporting a Berzerk robot. At first, I thought, wow, this forum software is cool that it picked up on the topic and placed a relevant icon ... oh, then I woke up. Albert
Great video Darrell, thanks for posting it! Robert, the movement of the robots looks spot on, great job! I also like how you duplicated the coloring of walls and bullets when they are close to the player. ..Al

If he can somehow get the "speech routine" done, this might be the first TRULY arcade-perfect port.
johnny_boy
So, the color clash is to emulate the arcade original, or because of technical constraints? Either way, I love it. Adds to the retro feel. Much better than the 2600 original. Of course, a few decades between the two doesn't hurt. Edit: How about when compared to the Berzerk VE homebrew? Is this one better? It doesn't look like it has the arcade difficulty and there are a few other differences but very nice. <edit> The arcade version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb4gWvqbsYA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7LnswhH32c I think the sound is better on the original arcade and shows the shift in voice pitch better. Robert Hurst
For certain, the color clash is a VIC thing -- the video is double-buffered using varying, on-the-fly, character-matrix software sprites. It certainly could not be bit-mapped within that memory footprint and screen resolution. And VIC doesn't have a 2.5mHz processor either, so to the hardware's credit, it does a fine job in keeping up with the action. It helps to have written a few software tricks, too. But that same color clash ends up emulating closely to what the Stern hardware did, too. Robot bullets turn green to match the human's color when passing nearby, and even Otto turns blue when passing through the walls (with the bits EOR'ed) and also green before destroying the humanoid. I suspect the Stern video hardware (8-color, 2 levels of brightness, EGA?) had a single bitmap depth with an 8x?? character cell for coloring, like VIC. At least they did not use a monitor cellophane for its coloring, eh? I have always liked the Atari 2600 version, too, recognizing the robot explosion sequence to be an inverse Otto character. There are some technical VIC folks that have expressed an interest in the voice synthesis part -- one is making a new cart with a chip to handle it. I have heard of a software technique, too, but have not gotten any access to it (yet). Who knows, perhaps the next YouTube video will have it saying, "Chicken, fight like a robot!" Enjoy!
Albert
The color clash is a VIC thing, the arcade machine didn't do that. The arcade machine does do it with the other sprites (shots and explosions for instance), which you can see in the videos you posted. Not the walls, though, I was misremembering there. ..Al

+SpiceWare
slick, though the voice could use a volume boost. I did figure out to turn Continuous AutoFocus off, no more blurry images. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myd_uRpG_Vw

Heaven/TQA
Requires a VIC 20 with 8k memory expansion and a joystick. Download the program binary here or its source archive. Hello Robert, I am converting and coding the original VIC20 Gridrunner on Atari 800 computers and I have issues with my sample player and converting the samples. If you would not mind maybe you can come over to the A8 forum and have a look in the Gridrunner Forum? Thanks! btw. good work!
Robert Hurst
This got a lot of attention this past week. First, I got Retro Gamer magazine issue #77 delivered to find this review of it in its Homebrew section. Then, this avid YouTube poster and retro gamer fan, Atarileaf, made this video review:
Jess Ragan
This looks a lot better than Amok! did, that's for sure! Hey, do you know if those Retro Gamer guys covered my conversion of GORF? I don't really read the magazine so I wouldn't know.
