Favorite Apple // Games?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I got ADT + Asimov working. HUZZAH! Now just like the Atari 8bits I'm asking users for input as to what are 'must plays'. I have some stuff on disk already, but there's a ton of software on these Asimov Archives I have never seen! So what, in your opinion, is an absolute must-play for the Apple //e?

I've already played/gotten:

Wizardry I (though I can't get it to work properly, still working on it)

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego

Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego

Hardball

Ghostbusters

of course all the arcade classics are must-play for me, but what else?

EDIT: Just clicking through the archives I am absolutely FLOORED at the amount of games in here!!! WHOA! This feels just like when I got my Atarimax flashcart and started clicking on sites like Fandal and AtariOnline.....  I could play a different game every day and it would take YEARS!!!!

This is almost "no more modern gaming for me" time! I have so much to catch up on! LOL

Wizardry I-V

Ultima I-V (although I and II are pretty weak)

Airheart

Prince of Persia

Lode Runner

Mr. Robot

Karateka

Kings Quest I-IV

Space Quest I & II

Manhunter

Police Quest

Infocom games

Centauri Alliance

Mr. Do

Rescue Raiders

Evolution

Mario Bros (great version)

Crisis Mountain

Miner II (odd but worth a play)

Stellar 7

Times of Lore

Family Feud / Jeopardy

AE

Hard Hat Mack

Pipe Dream

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. I'll look through my collection tonight.

Thanks Tempest! I knew you would come up with a solid and long list of stuff that I would enjoy! Wasteland was def. one of the first on my list, I loved that game on the PC.

I will probably go through it meticulously like I do with Fandal, and just alphabetically try everything to see what my favorites are, but in case I run into a streak of bad games and get discouraged I like to have a list of "good" ones to get me back in the swing of it!

Is Goonies a significantly different game or is it a port to/from A8? I really enjoy the A8 version but I think with the Apple //'s vibrant colors I will want to give it a whirl.

I just finished playing Wasteland on the Apple II this weekend. I like the Apple version best for some reason (probably because it's the one I grew up with)

Goonies is the same game, just different graphics (Apple colors)

Some more games to look for:

Conan

Millionware (odd trivia game)

Swashbuckler

The Bilestoad

Hacker

Apple Cider Spider

Summer Games

Winter Games

South Pacific Quest (love this game, very hard but amazing)

Gemstone Warrior

I don't like the lack of voice when your guy gets slimed in the Apple // version though. I always loved missing the trap and hearing "HE SLIMED ME!"....on my original Apple // disk it's just this weird muffled "WAGH" noise. Very strange to me! :?

To me the C64 version will always be my favorite Ghostbusters version.

The Apple II version had the worst 'voice' at the beginning. I swear to god it sounded like a demon trying to escape from the computer. I still don't know what it says, it sounds like "(grabled) Come on! Hahahaha"

Some other games to look into:

Castle Wolfenstein

Bruce Lee

Kings Bounty (one of my favorite)

Marble Madness (slow enough that I can actually beat it)

Arkanoid (ditto)

Spy vs Spy

Rampage

Tass Times in Tone Town (great game!)

Thexder (yep the Apple got a version of it)

Aquatron

Stargate

Choplifter

Miner 2049er

Akalabeth

Mario Bros.

Pooyan

Brick-Out

Sabotage (I've only played this in emulation, though...still don't have a copy)

There are probably others...I've got piles of floppies I've hardly touched in forever.

Regarding Wizardry, did you write protect the boot side before playing? That must be done or it'll be hosed.

Some of my favorite, obscure Apple ][ games:

Bouncing Kamungas

Taipan

BOLO

Sabotage

Alter Ego

Earth Orbit Stations

Yeah, I wrote-protected both disks (I'm putting the boot disk as 1 disk and the scenario disk as another), then swapped them out, then got to the main menu to select where to go after starting a game....but then the keyboard dies. I can't hit anything to go to the Adventurer's Guild or anywhere...

In absolutely no order. I post them as they roll off the top of my head.

Donkey Kong

Mario Bros.

Captain Goodnight

The Odyssey

Apple Cider Spider

Gremlins

Sammy Lightfoot

Montezuma's Revenge

Choplifter

Snoopy (can't remember the whole title)

BC's Quest for Tires

That's all I can remember for right now. I should play more Apple][, even if it's on an emulator. :(

What's the one with the little motorcycle? I'm not talking about a fast-paced action/arcade game. It was a super-simple kid's game, and one of the first I remember playing in elementary school. You told it the speed or how many cars you wanted to jump (or something like that) and it would draw a little motorcycle scrolling and then jumping the cars or buses or whatever they were. I can't remember the name. This is from back in the days when Oregon Trail was a hot commodity, so we're not talking about a sophisticated game here. It (and Oregon Trail) are of course the first computer games I remember seeing. If only I could remember the name!!!!

Hmm. Not even the Edge of Town? IIRC, some of them don't work until you have a party of characters. But Edge of Town should always work. And I think the tavern should always work as well.

(You do have a scenario duplicate disk, right?)

Some of the games you would have had in your collection no matter what.

They aren't always the best but it seems like every Apple owner I knew had them.

Gorgon - It's just a defender clone but with it's own twists.

Appleoids - Apple's unique twist on Asteroids.

Choplifter

Apple Panic - I'm noticing a trend here

Space Eggs - Sirius software is always good.

<edit>

Alien Rain

Some unique Apple games you might like:

Captain Goodnight

SunDog

I remember this one game on the Apple called "Monster Maze". It was a 2D game where you had to collect these red squares while avoiding the green ones (the monsters). If you picked up a purple one, you could kill them (don't return for the rest of the level). It also had a level editor where you could change the layout of the area however you wanted.

It would seem my favorite list is too long to type up, besides it would be incomplete as I tend to jump from one game to the next and I don't remember all of them at once! But the *most* common thing is that the games tended to be action oriented and most all had a length of 90-190 sectors (According to the disk][ catalog command) and were BRUN files. hot damn!! brun files! imagine that!
