Cobra Kai
Does anyone here know the story with Rygar? Why does the game not match the screenshots on the box? Why were the powerups trimmed down and changed from the arcade? Why can't you do the normal overhead arc attack? I've always wondered about these things. And despite the changes, it's still a standout title on the Lynx, I love the game but I don't really understand how they got the graphics and audio basically arcade perfect, and even the screenshots show all 5 powerup slots, yet somewhere along the way the powerup system got totally jacked up. +Sauron
I'm not sure anyone really knows the whole story with it, although it's remained one of my favorite Lynx games. I've played the Lynx version many times and think I played the arcade version once, many many years ago, so I really couldn't even go into the differences myself. The Lynx version of Rygar is closer to the arcade than any other version. The NES version really sucks and that's the one that most people who think they know anything about games usually compare it to. If all you've ever played is NES Rygar, you haven't played Rygar at all. Edited October 12, 2010 by OldAtarian
SoulBlazer
I really enjoyed NES Rygar, also....
108 Stars
The NES-Rygar is a flickering mess imo. I love the Lynx-game, but just can´t stand it on NES.

Well the ads and media for the Lynx was just messed up. I mean they had a Lynx add showing SONIC the HEDGEHOG on a Lynx. So go fig. As for Rygar... I have played that game for HOURS. Just a got a good pace that is challenging but not overwhelming and something I would really sink my teeth into. It might actually be my favorite game for the Lynx, and the Lynx has a lot of good titles.
108 Stars
doctorclu, seeing you praise Rygar while having Bubsy as an avatar and calling yourself a Bubsy Bobcat fan makes me wanna reconsider if I really like Rygar. If Bubsy-fans like Rygar, I must have missed a certain crappieness in Rygar.^^

Feel free to talk about Bubsy here though. That said, back to the topic of Rygar.... Edited October 14, 2010 by doctorclu
doyman
I was/am a big fan of the arcade version, and was disgusted with the NES version. Just one more arcade "translation" for the NES on par with "All you base are belong to us". Anyway Lynx Rygar kept me from going nuts on a flight from Minneapolis to Juneau and while different it is still good.

Wish I had Rygar on my 17 hour flight to Guam, but I have had the fortune of Rampage on the Lynx as I drove 12 hours from Dallas to St. Louis. Might have played some Rygar too. Austin
I see a lot of bashing of the NES Rygar.. I personally thought it was odd, but didn't give it much time. I hear it gets pretty good though later on, especially once you figure out what the hell you're supposed to be doing. I would still like to get my hands on the Lynx version though, it always looked good to me.
+swlovinist
First off I would like to say that I like ALL versions of this game. It is hard to compare the Atari Lynx Rygar and the NES Rygar together. The NES rygar was trying to be a totally different game. The NES version was not trying to be like the arcade game. It is actually a good action/RPG. Calling the NES version a flickering mess is like calling the Lynx version a blurry mess. It is all in preference(and what system you grew up on(or chose). I played the arcade Rygar back in the day and loved it. I liked that RYGAR was different on the NES and one that I beat back in the day. The LYNX version is good... but dang the music in the game could have been done better with retarded monkeys banging pans.... The import SMS version was decent as well. doctorclu
You play Lynx while driving? Hmmm... I take that as a challenge (next time I'm driving the long stretches of highway in Texas.)
Kiwi
Well, it could fit one more box on the status bar, the life counter only shows 5 men at a time. That power-up is the cross invincibility item. I believe the screenshot was the beta version of Rygar before it was out for sale. I think the developers had to cut some graphics and code out to get it to fit on a 256KB card. Such as there were no licking lizard during the rope climbing section, http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/rygar/rygar.htm. Despite the cut, it's still a wonderful, addicting, and fun game that anybody could enjoy. My mom played this game back in the 1990s and managed to beat it. She doesn't play many games. That's my theory why Rygar is the way it is now. Edited November 3, 2010 by Kiwi

Tempest
Wow, does the Lynx version really only have 25 levels? I was sooo close to beating it on my trip out to CA. I guess I'll have to try again. Tempest

Tempest 23 levels. I beat it last night. That final boss is a bit tricky. The crown power-up x2 every points you earn instead of chainsawing through the enemies, so you shouldn't have a problem getting over a million points, which is the last(?) extra lives was given. Tempest
I must have been really close then. I died on the level where you're underground and there are fireballs in the middle of the platforms rather than in-between them. Rex Dart
Man, I always felt that the NES game was the superior game. If you don't want to do any exploring, just run back and forth in the first area of the NES game. Ta-da, it's the arcade game!
johannesmutlu
Why does rygar on lynx sounds more like a sega master system???
R.O.T.S
Rygar on the Nes is a completely different game but it was not that bad,I did not mind it was not an arcade port but a new game in its own right. The Lynx version is okay but a little sparse and clunky but I agree with doctorclu and do think this could be one of the better games on the Lynx.. Out of the other 8-bit and other computer versions I have enjoyed unsurprisingly Argus no Sensji (Rygar-JPN) on the Sharp X68000 is the best and almost arcade perfect,in fact it could be. johannesmutlu
I like the nes version of rygar better because it a cross between zelda and metroid formula with still the rygar elements in it,but the lynx version is almost true to the arcade version with most things still intact, alltrough i found the arcade and also thus the lynx version way more repetitive, but despites the nes sound quality from the lynx version, it sounds sooo catchy.
