"Dungeon Monster" game on the way

From memory, the monsters just animate in place like in Alternate Reality.

So, it's for effect and not really critical to the gameplay, but would of course enhance the overall experience.

I think that a brick colour other than grey can only be a good thing.

All you need to do to simulate animation is to flip the image horizontally once in a while with an accompanying sound effect. That's how it looks like it was done on the ST to my eyes, anyway. I'm sure nobody expects more than that from an 8-bit.

As much as I love Dungeon Master, I think that a Dungeon Master-inspired Atari 8bit game would be better than a port. The coders could be creative in ways suited to the 8bit hardware and not be constrained by attempting to mimic a game programmed on 16bit hardware with superior graphics, speed, memory, and sound.

.

This should be borne in mind with all ports/conversions --- be very aware of the target machine you are using, and use this machine's capabilities. The end result has to stand on it's own, as it is - and it speaks volumes by itself.

Of course it is so much harder to go from ST to A8 - this ups the challenge and the difficulty involved, so you need all the creativity you can muster (and various tricks etc) to rise up to it.

Dungeon Master for Atari 8bit will be a big challenge. I played that on Amiga and it is a great game. It was a convincing and atmospheric 3D environment. The sounds helped a lot too. You could hear chains rattling in the distance for example. I'm pretty sure stereo was used. Without stereo, an Atari 8bit could simulate distance but not direction.

Dungeon Master appeared on the Atari ST first, so it could not have been stereo originally (pre STe) Stereo was probably just added to Amiga and other systems that could support it, but was not a core feature of the game.

Looking at the Atari ST screen shots and # of onscreen colors needed to do a passable port, have you figure out how to get around that? Possible ways keeping to 160x192 res would be PM underlays or Super IRG graphics. Of course I want to see more RPG and Adventure type games done on the Atari 8-bit.

I have been looking to port this game, The Dark Heart of UUKRUL. There is a Apple II version and MS-DOS version around 1989.

I know if we get the Apple II version, we can disassemble it and port it to the Atari. It is also giving me where I want to go with Secretum Labyrinth III, but that is a 2D overhead game.

Has anybody made any progress porting this Dungeon Monster program to the Atari 8-bit? Can be something that can be used for Turned Based Role Playing Games (RPGs) on the Atari 8-bit. As I mentioned we have a number of software and custom graphics modes that we can use the the dungeon bricks and overlay with these monsters.

Did they post the source code or any programming and data material anywhere? I thought about doing a 3D Dungeon Crawler engine. However I am also looking to make something more of a AD&D style engine also.

This is really no rocket science. But if you need a point to start go to:

http://ataribasiclistings.mygamesonline.org/

Download there the "CK_a10"-disk (under "Computer Kontakt Leser Disketten").

Boot the "CKA10A.ATR" disk to Basic and run "DDDLABY.BAS":

Mmmmmh, but thats only a 3D Maze where one has to find the exit. No monsters, no action, nothing, just walking around and trying not to get lost. Initializing of the Atari Basic program takes a minute or longer, thats why I created a CTB file of it and linked it with the CTB-linker into one executable file which starts almost instantly.

There are much better examples for (dungeon) RPGs, like:

- Castle of Blackthorn (german, requires 128k RAM, unfinished; TB XL source; gfx ripped from ST/Amiga): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=5566

- Labyrinth of Death (german and english versions, 64k RAM, TB XL): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4142

- Master of the Dungeons (english, 64k RAM, TB XL, unfinished, gfx ripped from ST/Amiga): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=3874

- Land of Mystery (german, no dungeon! 64k RAM, TB XL): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=6211

- Lankhmar (german, type-in listings from Atari Magazin, they had a RPG/dungeon corner there, this is the final product): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=5931

- Demo Dungeon (german, type-in listings from Atari Magazin, from the RPG/dungeon corner, playable demo), not available at Fandal's webpage...

- Arkaneth I (german, Compyshop Magazin, 64k RAM, TB XL): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=5366

- Arkaneth II (german, Compyshop Magazin , 64k RAM, TB XL): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=3784

- Gothic/Gohtic/Ghotic (german, PD, TB XL, no dungeon/more Ultima-style, but slow as hell! list protection!): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4064

- Mythos (german, Axis/Ariolasoft, Ultima-style, 64k RAM, Basic): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4210

- Gizmo's Castle (german, 64k and 128k versions available, CTB): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4068

- Unriagh I (german, 64k RAM, TB XL, 50% gfx-adv., 50% RPG with realtime fights! 4 disksides), not available at Fandal's webpage

- Unriagh II (german, 64k RAM, TB XL, 50% gfx-adv., 50% RPG with realtime fights! 8 disksides): picture shown at Fandal's webpage, but no download available...

- Phantastic Journey 1 (german and english versions, 64k RAM, TB XL, afaik no dungeon?; village pict. ripped from "Noisy Giant"): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4293

- Phantastic Journey 2 (german, 64k RAM, TB XL, afaik no dungeon): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4277

- Maze (french, 64k RAM, Basic or TB XL): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4961

- Strip Fun Maze (english, 64k RAM, Basic or TB XL): http://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=5254

To name just a few RPGs with or without dungeons, where one has more to do than just searching for an exit (searching for weapons, fighting monsters, buying clothes and other stuff, etc.).

Thanks, I hadn't seen some of those before.

I like the hi-color graphics mode used by Beyond Castle Blackthorn. It's quite suitable for this type of game, and gives a lot of flexibility for graphic pictures and scenes.

Looks like a minor update to Compute's "Caves of Ice".

You're a real computer, thanks!

Didn't know those games, apart Unriagh.

BTW, what is Unriagh Maker?

Unriagh is available at Homesoft website too (in this site you find "clean" version of all games - no starting graphic glitches or depacking waits).
