What happens when you turn on a 600xl without a game cart?

I think the 600xl I bought off of ebay does not work. When I turn it on, the power light comes on, but all I get is a red screen. I do not have any game cartridges, but I was lead to believe that even without a cart it will boot to basic, or at least give me something.

I know I have it hooked up properly because I tried the same cord with my master system and it works great. And before anybody thinks it's an automatic switch box, it's not. It's just an RCA cord that came with the computer, it has a little box that says Atari on it.

Any suggestions? If you guys verify that it will boot up even without a game cartridge, then I will defintely email the guy. I know it's only $15(actually $25 after shipping), but that's more than I'm willing to pay for non working electronics.

Thank you, I know some brilliant Atari Ager will either verify that it does not work, or verify I'm just an idiot who's doing something wrong.

When you boot up the 600XL, you should get the infamous "READY" prompt of Atari BASIC.

If you hold down the OPTION key while you turn on the power, you should get the SELF TEST mode. I believe it is the OPTION key or maybe the SELECT key.

If you hold down the START key while you turn on the power, you should hear a BEEP from the TV speaker ... this is how you boot from cassette. The BEEP is letting you know to press PLAY on the cassette player. You should hear the BEEP even if you don't have a cassette player attached.

Finally, if you turn on the computer and there is nothing on the screen, try type something to see if you can hear the key clicks from the speaker. Try this -

SOUND 10,10,10,10

If you hear a sound, maybe the video out is bad. If you hear nothing, your screwed.

Good luck

Thank you for all the information.

Whether I hear nothing or just the video out is bad, I'm still far from screwed. I'm guessing the seller will be willing to give me a refund. He/she has a very high feedback rating, so they must have some happy customers. If I don't get my money back, I will be very mad. It's not like I picked it up at a thrift for $2, not knowing if it worked or not. This was sold to me as working, I think I should get a refund on my shipping costs too.

Are you sure it is hooked up properly? No offense intended, but I believe that the Atari cable you mentioned is for hooking the computer's RF output to an RF-modulator thingee box (what is that thing rightfully called? switch with TV-Computer on it) and up to your TV's cable-in/UHF connection.

I know nothing about the master system, so I don't know that you have an RF-switch box on your TV or not and couldn't tell from your message. I also can't tell from your post if you are trying to hook it to your TV with a composite video in connection. If so, you need to use the monitor jack for that.

You should get the basic ready prompt as mentioned (and depicted.)

I'm guessing the thing you're describing(thing with computer-tv on it) is a switch box. I'm positive it's hooked up properly. I have used both a manual switchbox and a coax adaptor thing(both which hook into the tv's cable in connection) and niether have worked. And the same connection works great with my 2600, so it should work with the computer.

If you're seeing a Red screen I would say its hooked up - sounds like something inside the 600XL isnt very happy - Try to get the self test running and see if it complains about a RAM chip or something.

I can't get anything running. I really don't feel like trying to fix it or anything unless the seller won't refund my money. I'm hoping to just get my money back and buy another one later. Except next time I probably will buy like a 800xl, not a 600xl.

The XL OS does a quick memory test on startup and if it finds a problem it is supposed to dump you into the Self Test / Memory test automatically. In fact, you won't be able to get it to do anything else.

Sounds like it is something more serious is wrong.

Have you looked at the motherboard yet? Maybe you can see something obviously burnt.

you go defend you buying rights you tell him that you want a refund!

I replied by asking if by testing he just turned it on to see if it powered on(which it does) or actually make sure it boots up right. We'll see what he responds with. In the auction he says like clean in good working condition, but then right after that says "no refunds or warranties". I can still give him bad feedback though :P If you want to check out the auction, the link is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...=800541594&rd=1

I'd email him/her back and let them know that it was not received in working order.  Give them a chance to make it right, but also let them know that you will leave negative feedback if they don't make it right.

(After that we can flame them!)

Yeah, I'm giving them every chance. I just thought I'd put up a general warning until I get this problem solved. After I asked them if they just powered it up or made sure it booted up correctly, they said "No, we have an atari here and it was tested to make sure it works??". I'm not sure exactly what they mean by that though. What should I say in my reply email?
