Opry99er
I would like to propose something that some may like, some may not. Every year, the CTIUG gives yearly awards in 3 categories... -Hardware -Software -Community Service We are a rapidly growing and strengthening user group, here on Atariage--- and I think it would be appropriate to hold our own awards... Not to replace or circumvent the CTIUG awards in any way, but more a recognition of those in our community here on AA who have made significant contributions... I don't think we necessarily have to use the same categories, but it's an option. I think this could be a very cool thing.... There are certainly people who deserve recognition for making this group so successful... I guess the first question for you guys is, What categories would we like to give an award for? Do we like "Software, Hardware, Service" or do you guys have other ideas? When would we like to give out this award? January 1st? We could take nominations on this thread or via private AA mail... Maybe you guys don't like the idea of AA Awards... Let us know your thoughts! Edited November 12, 2010 by Opry99er
Opry99er
BTW, I would be happy to coordinate these awards and remove myself from consideration. I want there to be some debate on the categories and whatnot... If this is even a topic that interests you guys... IMHO, we should honor the great contributions of those who program "rabidly" and those who work diligently on hardware while keeping us updated regularly on progress... I think this could really be a cool thing. Certainly there are 99ers on here who are deserving of this award... With the CTIUG awards, the AA people don't even get a vote unless you're on the OLUG. I nominated two people who primarily do their work on Atariage, and nobody was even aware of them. "Who?"

I don't think formal awards do much except to create strife and politics both of which are nicely absent from AA at this point. It's my opinion that results and efforts tend to speak for themselves without the extra trumpeting. Contests I am in favor of because of this but the obligatory award.... meh.... Opry99er
Point taken. Thanks Marc. =)
InfernalKeith
I think awards are tough in such a small group. Basically patting each other on back, and inevitably forgetting/snubbing someone. Until/unless we hit some critical mass of people where we have a lot more casual users and interested folks, and not just a small core of people all doing projects, I don't see it going well. Just my 2K.
Opry99er
Perhaps if it's a straight vote count--- there's no favoritism or nepotism... . Awards given by votes from your peers... It could be a really nice thing... But Marc's point is valid too.

Opry99er
Well, it was a thought. I'm glad you guys were upfront and honest. Others, feel free to chime in, but it looks like it's unanimous
matthew180
We are too small. *Everyone* here is doing something, so everyone would get an award; then you would be out of people to award... Matthew
Dan Iacovelli
I guess you people don't recall something done by stanjr. called the stan awards(last seen in 2005) laserman 2k3 was nominated for one but didn't win the 2600 homebrew catagory, even though people have said that it was one of the best of hacks of keystone kapers they have seen. +adamantyr
I agree with the masses... an awards system can easily become a game of favorites and cliche's. We've got a great friendly atmosphere here with the contests system, let's keep going with that. (Although I must admit I'm not really fond of the "crap game" contest myself... I'd rather do something like "only in BASIC") Adamantyr
Chuck D. Head
Ah heck, just start a thread for a certain award, let people put in their nominations and let those nominations be the award. You don't need to tally the votes. Anything that gives people a chance to say something positive about someone else is a good thing....... Opry99er
Adam--- as soon as the crap game contest is over, we're going to do a 12k or under TI console BASIC only contest (so it will fit on cassette). The goal? A cassette compendium, of course!!!
+retroclouds
Agreed, contests are fine but I don't like those "official" awards that much. It's like putting a stamp on you and it raises expectations. Well, that's my personal opinion.

Opry99er
Gotta keep anonymity. don't want people getting an early start on the contest or anything. Should I just announce it now and say Feb 1 is the deadline? I don't want to walk on Willsy's contest.

Should I just announce it now and say Feb 1 is the deadline? I don't want to walk on Willsy's contest. This is just my "humble" opinions ... I don't mind many threads each on Faire, Forth, books and cassette based games. It's alright. Also I don't see any problem with more or less parallel contests. You could start the 14K now, but I think "entries" should be allowed from the work go. Feedback on work in progress (or project finished) is part of the contest activity. I wouldn't wanna discourage any potential contests starters or should I say contests conductors. Yes, I think there's a certain "burden" attached to the task apart from putting up prices (if any). As a fire starter, you need to show interest and keep the fire burning. And not just a "What's up ?" and "Nice job !". Genuine interest, questions and comments please. I will try and support any contest with input and at least one entry (software only).
