Atari 8-bit related BBS(s)

16 Bit won't do and 48 bit would be overkill, so 24 bit integer sounds very plausible but how can you get the black box to use a "too high" sector number? When accessing the hardware externally with your own code it's likely possible but the BB menu doesn't allow one to use such sector numbers. Or does it?

Indeed, the menu won't allow it. But I am not sure whether it's only the menu that does not support it; IIRC there are 3 memory locations where the sector number is stored. I guess it asks for a new firmware to use higher sectors.

But for me it's not an important issue. In fact... I have more than enough space when I have 128MB storage. I can imagine that a BBS which a huge download needs more.

I've been trying to set up an Atari 8-bit BBS at a local hackerspace, but I'm running into a lot of obstacles getting the software working.

  1. I found Oasis Jr but the ARC files are corrupted.
  2. I found Carina 2, but can't get past the "Enter Registration #" prompt.
  3. I found the "BBS on a Stick" version of BBS Express, which works, but displays the user's password on the screen, and the BBS's display is going to be in a relatively public place.
  4. Most other packages seem to require more RAM or hardware than I have; right now I'm trying to run them off an unexpanded Atari 800XL.
  5. Can't find the really good options like Express Pro or Oasis 4.

is it normal to get stuck at this point?

Actually, for Carina, I got past registration by entering the number "1"... but now the emulator crashes after the "Programming Modem" even though I have the R: patch enabled and he SIO patch disabled. It makes that "device not found" noise a bunch and freezes.

Is BBS Pro! still available for purchase? I know there were some topics in the past about the copyrights and the owner of the source etc.

I know Stephen J. Carden develops TCP/IP Express. It's one of the best BBS packages you can get, but it is not free.

If you want the best experience, go for that, and buy it...

I am not certain how to fix this. I updated the settings on the Lantronix and still get garbage characters when logging in on my 8-bit (through a Lantronix as well). I do not get those characters when in Telnet mode. I am slowly editing the ASCII/ANSI menus and I think I have ANSI figured out, but I know ATASCII is working. I will also start putting files up.

I am going to try logging in through emulation and see if that gets me the same response. If anyone else is logging in through emulation and can let me know, that would be great.

Finally, if anyone notices any time irregularities, please let me know. My replacement R-Time8 cartridge (that is nearing "commercial" availability) has been running the time on the BBS for the last 3-4 days.

MacRorie,

Did you try the settings I gave you to program into the Lantronix UDS-1100?

On a PC log into the Lantronix UDS-1100 via 'Telnet Configuration' connection using their device installer utility to configure these settings:

First, select '7 Defaults' and then, '9 Save and exit' to clear out any previous old settings.

Next, select '1 Channel 1' and make these adjustments:

*** Channel 1

Baudrate: 9600

I/F Mode: 4C

Flow: 05

Port: 10003

Connect Mode: CE

Send '+++' in Modem Mode: enabled

Show IP addr after 'RING': enabled

Auto increment source port: disabled

Remote IP Adr: --- none ---, Port: 00000

Disconn Mode: 00

Flush Mode: 00

Example:

This cured my UDS-1100 from the extra characters spitting out.

If that does not work, contact Mad Hatter on Heatwave BBS. He had to get rid of the extra characters spitting out on his BBS:

Telnet to: www.heatwavebbs.com:9640

Mad Hatter can give you his Lantronix configurations and solution he implemented.

Hope this helps! Good luck.

Good news! You may download Oasis Jr disks 1 & 2 from my BBS. Telnet to: yyzbbs.no-ip.org:65

I have the two discs + documentation in the downloads section. They are arc'ed, so you will need to also download the Un-Arc utility to unzip them.

Hope that helps,

Update:

So, I edited the text files and a new error cropped up: 136 (EOF). This is annoying. ALL of the ATASCII files work fine as they were edited on my daily driver with TLW. However, everything I edited under Windoze&Mac, gives that error. ANy ideas on what text editor to use for ANSI/ASCII files on the 8-bit? I tried just using files from The Last Word without any inverse, but that does not work either. Any suggestions wouldbe appreciated.

The ATASCII side owrks fine EXCEPT there is noise coming over on the key input. I do not see it on the BBS screen, but I certainly see it on the caller side. Do you think the speed is too high? Should I drop it down to 9600?

Grrr.

Speed can be an issue. I run 8-Bit Guild BBS (BBS Express) at 2400 bps in ATASCII/ASCII and I run YYZ BBS (Oasis Jr BBS Systems) at 9600 ATASCII/ASCII/ANSI. Slow that baby down a bit where it was designed back in the day!

Thanks. Once I get a working system (either the Incognito 800 or the XL with a working BBox) up and functioning, I will def try this out.

Is your BBS still up? tried to log in today.. nothing. No Connection?

I am repairing it as we speak. Every time I turned the power off to change something physically, all of the message boards went south. I think I have all the items I need to fix it. For awhile I was running it off of floppies, but then that went south as well. Will get it up in a bit.

My apologies the Motel was not open to receive you!

YYZ I am getting garbage on the screen with 80col. width using AT-telnet.

Any idea why? I am simulating an Atari.. it sees me as one.. I use ? to go to main menu.. it is messed up.

James

p.s cant connect to Bates Motel yet either.

YYZ does NOT support 80 col ATASCII.

When you use the 'W" command to set the width to 80 col, it automatically changes your translation to ANSI.

At-Telnet does NOT support ANSI (and never will). It is an ATASCII terminal only.

Set the BBS and your AT-Telnet terminal to 40 cols and you will be fine.

YYZ BBS is running on Oasis Jr. BBS software (Public Domain 1988). Currently I'm running these modes:

40 column callers in ASCII or ATASCII

80 column callers in ANSI

Thanks,

Bates Motel is shuttered until I can get a @#$%^&*( system to cooperate.

BlackBox is refusing to work with SCSI drives. IDE2.0 does not like the drive(s) I have prepared for it, so am going to try something else. Hopefully it will work. WIll let everyone know.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have multiple platforms at my house (Atari 800XL, Commodore 64, Apple //e (and //gs), a Tandy 1000RL-HD), so I'm aiming for that. Plus, with having 1.4TB of space available, it should be able to handle it for quite awhile.

Also, different doors across different platforms. I am curious if I can do emulation and have it feed information to Synchronet (sort of a FOSSIL door). We will soon find out!

I was wondering how your project was coming along? I am very interested in seeing if there is some way we can use the door idea and link it with a modern forum.. like AA for example, and upload and dowload msgs like a feed.

James
