Luigi301
Hmm. I've tried calling a few BBSes with my XM301 (not SX212, sorry). I get a carrier and a connection but nothing ever comes up in XE-Term. I'm trying to call this BBS at 717-664-3735. I tried Bobterm but it doesn't recognize the SIO modem. Luigi301
I thought Bobterm loaded the R: handler for you? If not, I’ll need to dig one up for the 301. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bikerbob
Luigi301, if you can dial and get a tone, etc.. then you have a handler in. Bobterm is your best bet, look up the 301 modem.. look for handler, driver etc.. you rename it in the Bobterm disk.. I assume your using floppy? and you should be good to go. If the BBS is working. Luigi301
The problem seems to be my SIO2PC. I unplugged it and I can connect to BBSes now.
Luigi301
Well, I can connect but the result is garbage on my screen. I'm connecting at 300bps, ASCII translation, full-duplex to Hidden Reef BBS. I'll get about half a screen and a bunch of corrupt garbage. Entering something at the logon prompt causes it to echo back the wrong character and disconnect me. Gah. I don't know if it's line noise, the SIO2PC clashing with the modem, or what.
_The Doctor__
if you have and sx212 you can load the driver with bobterm the xm301 driver is not the one to use.... also be aware the hidden reef may be using ansi or ti's graphics set for the BBS....... it is a texas instruments bbs if I remember correctly... _The Doctor__
300 baud shouldn't be a problem... time to call FIOS.... they need to fix that... fios digital voice and fios phone are for whatever reason considered different things I don't understand why since the both are voip... the transport codec/protocol they use can be the culprit.... I do have a friend who was told his fax wasn't compatible and needs to buy a fios compatible device blah blah, he then explained vonage voip works fine who needs fios for phone at that point they escalated the call and wonder on wonders they fixed the problem and his fax modem magically started working in a few days.... _The Doctor__
another fella said he had to change out his verizon fios router to a better one, I can't remember exactly something about moca vs ethernet and advanced blah blah blah.... he bought it online and swapped out the verizon supplied one.. last scenario is possible also bad or reversed phone line wiring inside the home... a forgotten line transformer etc.... phone wire near a noise producing device/light/motor/fan etc etc Edited October 27, 2017 by _The Doctor__
Luigi301
I figured out the problem! The 600XL cant supply power to an SIO2PC and the modem at the same time. Looks like Im investing in an 850 or a joystick port modem. Are there any relatively common modems that have external power supplies and dont require an 850? Id prefer not adding a huge box to my setup if I dont have to.
_The Doctor__
You need to replace the power supply block..... pick the better Atari Supplies 1.5 to 2 amp mine all supply... but 1.5 minimum is guaranteed... a number of the supplies are 1 amp and or fail know to cook the chips in the Atari. You don't want the ingot solid heavy POS or any of the 1 amp supplies... Edited October 28, 2017 by _The Doctor__

_The Doctor__
Personally I only use the white brick or the black brick, the peanut and the ingot couldn't handle memory upgrades and sio modem and sio2sd all running at once for a number of years.... most europe machines had 1.8 amp supplies and since alot of upgrades today and sio devices demand so much a nice 2 amp supply has been the best on them... if you get a 2 amp supply you sio powered devs will be quite well fed.... Kyle22
J.F.K was shot from the FRONT as well as the side. Find out where to see the video on my BBS: telnet://broadway1.lorexddns.net/23 Lots of cool stuff and breaking news! Edit: You must send me Feedback to give you access to certain areas. Let me know. Tillek
So just FYI.. Finally got the BBS list up.... http://www.sfhqbbs.org/ataribbslist.php It is DB driven, so I still have a bit of work to do with it. (For one thing, the verify does nothing except pop up a box). I need to do some work on it once I figure out the best way to make sure it doesn't get abused by the more malicious types, so eventually adding BBSs and editing your own BBS will be available. The first thing I plan to do though is have some buttons that will shoot out a plain text 80-col and 40-col list (and hopefully even an ATASCII file) that you can just pop your own header on and put it right on your BBS's if you like. Let me know if there is anything missing or incorrect (especially if you have webpages)... and if you have any comments or suggestions. If there aren't any issues in a day or two, I'll start passing it around.
Tillek
And I just remembered that doing a little key/legend to explain things is probably important.. I'll do that later tonight. Just to clarify On Line and Off Line are pretty much self evident... The difference between "Down" and "Off Line" is that "Down" means that it's down, and we know it's down and we know it will be up whenever the issue is fixed. (currently in the case of Lord Cygnus' BBSs that are down because of his move, but will be back up. (There is also an "Uncertain" for when a BBS can't be reached for a bit, but no news is heard). And any suggestions on how long to wait between cycling through the status.

Tillek
Thank you... but like I said, there is still work to be done.. and questions to be answered. I got the "icon legend" in. So the next question is, handling verifications and SysOps adding/editing their own data. Would people who want to do that have issues with having a login system? I'm afraid just "trusting" the internet will lead to all the BBS listings turning into foreign language Viagra ads..... I was going to try to tie it to the phpbb forum, but that is proving to be way more trouble than it's worth, and many people probably won't care about the forums who just want to update the list (and vice versa). Also, I'd like to consider having more detailed information (click the BBS name and more info appears). What kinds of things would interest you? the ability to have BBS news for your BBS attached to the listing? Any other ideas?

Tillek
twice a week, put it in the scheduler for the two slowest days at the slowest hour of BBS access that are at least 3 or 4 days apart Well, no... I mean... Let's say you try to log on my BBS, but can't connect. You already know that I use a Lantronix box and if someone is on the BBS, you won't be able to connect. So letting you go to the site and mark it "down" would be jumping the gun a tad. And these are 30 year old machines, with 30 year old software. They crash from time to time. So how many people, over how long a period of time should report a system to be unresponsive before marking it "uncertain"? How long after that, if the SysOp can't be reached, before marking it down.... How long after that, before it's removed? Right now, it's not automated (if that was what you're thinking). I could potentially automate it, but frankly..... I think even when I get busy, I personally call them at least monthly. Some daily (or at least weekly when things get crazy). Add in letting others verify them... I think we'd be good without automation. But on the other hand... if you have ideas on that..... I just don't want to necessarily rely on something that can only ping. (In other news, touched bases with the Grove Sysop on Facebook. Looks like there may have been a technical reason that he was unaware of (we all get busy) for why The Grove hasn't been reachable for awhile. If he gets that worked out, we have another BBS back in the list. I asked him to touch base with me when he does.....) That is what I'm asking. Right now,
_The Doctor__
we go offline for maintenance and a storm we go down for repairs down for to long we are Uncertain what we are doing... can I get the parts do I have the time money if it's a really long time we are gone when we end it and move on to other things... In my experience most boards are online/offline weekly, are only down 1 to 3 months, at 6 months they are uncertain, and at a year they are gone or removed.... but if I follow your' terminology... 1 week to a month uncertain? 1-3 months offline? 6 months down? 1 year removed Edited October 31, 2017 by _The Doctor__
Tillek
Sounds reasonable. Also, terminology... at this point, I'm using "down" to mean... "Ok, it's down... but Lord Cygnus let everyone know he's moving, so yeah, his BBS is down, but it will be back once he gets that squared away and gets settled in his new place so just be patient, it's all good". With "Off Line"... "Toxic Nipple has been unreachable for awhile. Got with the SysOp, and he had some issues he was working on... that was awhile ago and heard nothing since and it's still been unreachable the whole time, so now it's marked "Off Line" until we know something more). If anyone has a better idea for what "terms" are better (or more intuitive) for what sates..... I'm open. (I'm trying to make this as easy and clear as possible, but I'm a software engineer so that means I overthink things exponentially).
Tillek
(And thank you, Doctor for your input. I plan to bother you later for an issue I'm having with my MSS-100 that's messing with the BBS from time to time).
