This one is a doozy. I need to get pictures to really set the stage, so next time it happens I'll take a video.

Really seems like something is corrupted, but trying to restore the firmware... doesn't seem to do anything.

(Now watch it not happen for months...)

lantronix boxes are run on linux/unix like/based os with almost everything based in C as the programming language... get the sdk and tools from the lantronix archives...

It's PUC (Portable Universal C) provides a C language environment for programming.standard C code, with some limitations. The MSS compiles the C code into a bytecode and then executes the bytecode. The Lantronix SDK comes with documentation, sample code, and an customization guide to assist in writing your own applications for the MSS.

The SDK is for adding customized software that is not on the MSS, whether it be a network wrapper for a serial device, a custom protocol, or a non-standard means of access or control such as generating email, transferring a file via FTP, or creating an SNMP MIB.

You should have experience using file I/O operations under C, because that is how the serial and network data is handled. If you have used sockets libraries under Unix or Windows, it's sorta kinda like that

The Lantronix SDK is intended to take over the MSS' basic function: moving data from serial to network and vice-versa. C code can read from or write to the serial port, accept network connections, make decisions based on serial or network data, etc. Applications have access to most of the built-in functionality of the MSS.

it's application-level programming. You do not need to learn, implement, modify or debug any of the OS-Level code(though some have hacked it). The MSS provides a TCP/IP protocol stack, serial flow-control, NVR and filesystems, network time, timer, FTP server, web server, and SNMP function, in a UNIX-like way.

can you say paraphrasing? sure I knew ya could... :)

mss100 tips of the day in dynamic mode three ways to hang up and resume waiting for incoming Ethernet connection

make sure your settings were done as follows

in setup while in privilege mode

change modem emulation enable
change autostart character "A"

You do not need to enable autostart, that is implied by the modem emulation setting.

Once modem emulation is enabled, it uses the autostart character to put the serial port into command mode which is the equivalent to getting the Local prompt on the serial port when you are not using modem emulation. In that state, the port is in "Local Mode" and it is awaiting a command and will NOT allow incoming IP connections.

Now it is in Local Mode, it needs to go back to Idle before it will accept incoming connections from the network. Here are a 3 ways to do this.

A) Is for the serial device (bbs software or terminal) to toggle its DTR pin, which toggles our DSR pin. This is the normal way a modem is reset using hardware lines.

B) Is to set an idle timer and enable it on the serial port. This will automatically log out the session after a set amount of time.

The commands for this are:

change inactive timer 1
change inactive logout enable

C) Is to issue an AT command of "ATC logout" from the serial side to reset the port.

even if you rtfm you might miss this stuff.... my eyes often glaze over these days

btw ATC means attention command pass thru follow it by the command you want to issue to the mss.. it'll do it's best to comply

I just acquired a UDS-100 - I have not tested it yet, it does power up.. go through its flashing lights between ready and Diagnostics, and then finally sitting on ready. I have the manual, not had a chance to go through it yet.

I was thinking it might be fun to setup BBS on different software than whats popular, just to see what it looks like. OR use it on the ST rather than my Cosmos - but I have the cosmos working now with STiNG so maybe its better intended for use on my 8-bits.I had ordered it before I understood that the cosmos could also get me online through wifi. so .. pretty kewl there.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Boot Factory 2K+ BBS will be down for a few days while I re-arrange my office to make more room for my Ataris.

Yeah, that's been on my 2du list for awhile.

Fortunately, got a lot of PTO time coming up.

(Let me know when you're back up and I'll update the list).

So just an update.....

I verified and updated the BBS list tonight http://www.sfhqbbs.org/ataribbslist.php

Welcome back YYZ! (Let me know when you get 8-bit Guild running).

Also, The Grove is back! Apparently he didn't know he's been down. ;) Funny who you find on random Facebook threads......

ST Guild was the only one I couldn't verify, but I can reach out to the SysOp and try again later.

Safe travels!

Hey All,

So, for the past few weeks I have been playing around with an old AMIS BBS program just to start a fun side project. Part of me wants to start up a dial up an ATARI BBS just for the fun of it and see how it turns out. Its something I always wanted to do back in the day but never got serious about it. What do you guys think?

I'd say do it, but then I've been toying with a similar idea. Haven't really looked into what it would take to accomplish, but was considering a Linux / mgetty / emulation stack for it.

Hey guys, I have had NO free time lately to work on the BBS, but I have not forgotten about it.

I need people to start conversations on this thing. If a new message base subject is needed, let me know.

Remember, this is one of the few running on REAL hardware. An original 800 with Incognito in this case.

telnet://broadway1.lorexddns.net

Static IP: 23.25.83.98

I have News before most people have seen it. :)

Edit: (Probably not necessary, but ) Standard Telnet port 23.

Also, I tried a different WAITCALL and it reprogrammed (F'ed Up) my UDS-10 and it has caused me to have problems calling out to other BBS's.

Different versions of modules, it seems, cause copyright checks and PARANOID Pirate messages to be displayed.

File transfer modules in particular.

This is disgusting BULLSHIT!

That's the reason I haven't been calling out lately.

That WAITCALL is almost like an evil VIRUS programmed by a SNAKE!

Edit: We ALL know who the SNAKE is.

:)
